Okay first off, I just want to say that for some reason, obtaining answers to questions on the dsmtuners forum has been a bit difficult for me. For some reason, my history is marked with unanswered questions and no feedback. This time it's not something I can figure out by myself, I need advice because I have exhausted everything except a couple of possibilities. Here are the symptoms, comments, and things I have already tried:

Symptoms:
-The car gets up to 30 counts of knock retard at 11 psi even at part-throttle and parts boost. The knock counts get higher as I push the car harder with more throttle/boost.
-At WOT I'm getting a maximum of about 13* of timing.
-The o2 voltage (under boost) on my bosch o2 sensor was .83-.85 at WOT. The o2 voltage on my denso sensor was .87-.89 as read on MMCD.
-The car has a random miss at idle which seems to become frequent when the car is very warm (after a long drive or something).
-The base timing is set at 5* btdc, but when I set the idle to 750, as soon as I remove the alligator clip grounding the timing adjustment plug by the firewall, the idle jumps up to between 950-1050 (no load from power steering, fans, headlights etc.) where it will happily idle with the occasional gurgle or pop when it misses with no major fluctuations.
-Spark plugs are white as a ghost, there a couple issues I did not have resolved that may have caused the plugs to become white, but they are definitely not changing their color. I'm not sure if plugs that have been ran under a lean conditon can still be used but I have replaced the plugs so many times, these are practically brand new. On the same note, my trims were between 110-120% until I swapped o2 sensors and reset them, now they are hovering around 100% give or take about 8%.

Things I have already tried:
-Swapping o2 sensors, in fact, I have tested, monitored, and/or swapped just about every single sensor in the car. I have tested and swapped the coolant temp sensor, maf, cas...
-FIAV, ISC, BISS, shaft seals, are all brand new (except the FIAV since it's built into the TB) but it works perfectly.
-The ECU is freshly rebuilt by motoguy's garage, it is a 91 EPROM with a chip for 550's and MAFT. Since my car is a 90, I did the full conversion to 91 ignition (wiring on ECU harness, gauge cluster, power transistor and coil pack). I have RC550 injectors to work with the EPROM. I am assuming that the MAFT has no effect and is similar to having a 1g MAF because my barometer, IAT, and maf readings all fluctuate normally.
-Car has absolutely negatively posolutely NO boost leaks. It seems like that is the first answer that everybody gives and I'm sick of hearing it (no offense intended). For each time I hear the word boost leak, I shall remove one of the violators toenails with a sharpened bamboo chute. :nono:
-

Comments:
-Could it be a weak fuel pump somehow? I highly doubt it, but I have not been able to check my fuel pressure yet due to the lack of a gauge. I did swap the FPR to no avail.
-Could it be false knock? Since I rebuilt my motor and removed the balance shafts, there is some vibration noise above ~4k rpm. I'm hoping most of it will be gone when I do my turbo back exhaust with no heat shields, but is there any way to see if is false knock or not? By the way, I do have the 3g "quiet" lifters and they really are quiet. The engine just purrs like a kitten.
-Could there be something in that EPROM that I don't know about that would make the fuel tables be off?? If the barometer and air temp were zeroed out would they still fluctuate on the logger?
-I believe that whatever is causing that random miss at idle is the source of my problem.

I have honestly racked my brain, stared at the engine fiddling with things for hours to see if something jumps out at me and there is nothing. I am not a newbie, I rebuild the entire motor from scratch, all the wiring, clutch and tranny, etc. etc. by myself and I just can't figure this out for the life of me. Anybody who helps me I would honestly be in your debt.

Thanks for reading the whole post, if there are any questions or clarification needed please mention it, you know that I will be monitoring this thread like a hawk.

TO ANYBODY IN THE SF BAY AREA THAT WOULD LIKE TO HELP, I WILL MAKE IT WORTH YOUR WHILE IF YOU COULD SPEND A COUPLE HOURS HELPING ME TROUBLESHOOT OR AT LEAST GET A FRESH MIND IN THE PICTURE.

I had a similar problem and ther wasnt much help for me ether but i could give you a few pointers and i no that problem is very annoying!

1.Check the knock sensor make sure its behind cyclinder #2 because there are 2 holes back ther that it will fit in its a comon mistake.

2.Check to see if the goop is still in it and that the wire itsn hanging around, also try and torque it to 14-18 lbs if possible, refer to a chiltons or so.

3.Pull the sensor out rap a little teflon tape around the threads to help reduce small counts.

4.Check your starter bolts or ac compressor anything that could possibly be around ther raddling around.

Im new to this site so im not sure how frequintly ill be on but leave feed back on this.

Well I feel your pain LOL. My car gets 20-30 plus counts of knock also. I have had no luck finding a solution to this problem either. It sucks and im actually selling my car soon because im sick of this on-going problem (dont want to frustrate you but I have tried a lot of things to fix it with no luck).

Anyways what you can do to see if you have "real" knock is a couple things. First you can un-hook your wastegate which will obviously give you no boost and see if there is knock. In my case I got 0 counts of knock. The best thing though is to put some good old c16 in the car and see what happens. In my case my knock was completly gone! 0 counts of knock on 23psi and 21 degrees of timing, the car runs great. But as soon as I go back to pump gas I get 20+ counts of knock on even 14psi, I actually hate driving my dsm now its gotten so bad. And also trying race gas eliminates the most common issues people will suggest i.e. bad knock sensor or boost leaks. Good luck! :)

I would check all the regular maintenance stuff like, plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc. From what you described you are running very lean. Check the stuff I mentioned and figure out your misfire. If that doesn fix it then you need to richen it up.

I have the exact same problem, except that i also have boost creep after 4k rpms.I'm trying with a new o2 sensor this week and i have a 2g o2 housing for the other problem to see if i can fix em.I have the same problem you do but i get up to 40 counts of knock at wot,and the engine isn't knocking.I haven't gotten to check my knock sensor. If it's good,I'm just gonna have my buddy chip my ECU to ignore the fake knock.I don't know how he does it,but it works(I'm not good with the electronic stuff).I imagined you could of added this feature to your TMO setup.Have you tried this?Just to let you know,i feel your pain, just gotta take it one day at a time.

Make sure you are getting somthing rattling under the hood, like the exhaust hitting the side ETC.... Anything like this could cause knock, but I would say add some fuel to you afc and check your knock sensor for black gew coming out the back, hell even if not change it anyway, And then seee what happens,,,,,,,,,,DO NOT HAVE YOUR FRIEND TAMPER WITH YOUR ECU and kill the knock detector, you just might kill an engine over that. Just be calm and you will figure it out, I have the exact came prob and it ended up being a bad knock sensor. Hang in There!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the support, hopefully I will be able to figure out but as some of you already know, it's damn frustrating. I highly doubt it's the knock sensor, it is running lean for some reason. It has that random gurgle at idle and it doesn't want to idle right at 750 no matter how many times I reset it.

As far as the knock sensor, it has under 2000 miles on it and I assembled it with the engine out of the car. It's a mitsubishi piece straight from the dealership. I torqued it by hand but just enough to keep it from coming loose. I believe the spec is only 4 ft lbs for the knock sensor.

I had a weird hunch... I think that it's possible my A/C compressor is making that vibration noise I was telling you about. I will try to remove the belt and see if that helps. However that doesn't change the fact that it's still lean.

The fuel filter is basically new as well. I am curious to know if it could be at all possible to have a weakened fuel pump that couldn't support the pressure under boost???? What stores rent out fuel pressure testers??

The other thing I was thinking of as a sort of diagnostic. Would I somehow be able to purposely keep the car in closed loop by unplugging a couple sensors to see if that fixes the problem??

Have you tried using racegas? That will give you an answer if your seeing real knock or phantom knock, if you dont have any knock w/ race gas then its not gonna be things rattling under the hood like your ac compressor. Its a good way to start narrowing down the possible problems.

I'll put race gas on my list of things to narrow down the problem this weekend... actually, I have a few logs but I don't know where or how I could post them to the website. If anybody wants to have a look I'd really appreciate it. Just PM me your email where you'd like it and I can send you a couple mmcd logs. Thanks in advance.

After toiling with my archaic Palm IIIxe I finally got the logs on my computer. Let me know if you want some normal driving and idle logs...

Here is a log after I swapped my bosch o2 sensor for my old denso o2 sensor and reset the fuel trims. It is only a short burst but I don't like to push it too hard:

Here is another log, of just some normal cruising with TPS < 40 %. My fuel trims are starting to deviate after I reset them from the last log... and ignore the INJP column its incorrect.

COMMENTS??????

Next time only log timing rpm o2 and knock at full throttle in 2nd or 3rd gear. You are looking a little lean in between 4-5k and it does seem like you may a bit of phantom knock at lower rpms. I would add fuel in between 4-5 and log after every adjustment. Keep adding fuel until the knock goes away. If it doesnt go away then there is probably something else going on, but adding more fuel is probably your safest bet.

I know it is lean, it is lean under boost at any RPM actually not just 4-5k. I just did short bursts because it's knocking so badly I don't want to push it hard or anything.

More comments????

I had a thought... has anybody ever had danaged eprom chip, or would that lead to unpredictable problems??

On another note, that miss at idle which I believe is linked somehow to my other issues gets worse as the cars warms up and runs for a while. The exhaust sounds like it's gargling at idle after running for half hour forty five minutes with the occasional noticeable miss and slight drop in rpm.

I do not have an AFC either. The car is mostly stock (mod wise) with a built engine, brand new head, 550 injectors + eprom. So no AFC right now.

Well it's lean and you need to richen it up so, there aren't many options. Buy something that can give you adjustments in fueling(safc, dsmlink, etc). If you have an adjustable fpr you could turn up the fuel pressure a little.

Could you have a bad ICS? That maybe the problem at idle. I just swapped out a bad knock sensor and boy did it make a difference.

Does anyone know if it is possible to just jump the two wires of the knock sensor and see if that fools the ECU to thinking there is no knocks?

to see if the knock sensor works?

just connect volt meter to it with key on engine off and take a hammer or something mettel and tap around that general area and see if you get a reading.

The knock sensor is basically brand new. It has about 2000 miles on it and it was purchased brand new straight from hell (satan's dealership). I'm almost positive it's not the KS, I BARELY torqued it down but I guess it's worth a try to give it another go and retorque the sensor and maybe clean up the threads a little bit. However, the block was tanked, and the hole was spotless when I built the engine and installed the KS.

Anyway... I have had a new revelation. I think that my spark plug wires may be causing a problem. They are NGK's but are power steering fluid/oil soaked and look a bit worn down. Hmm... I'm going to get my hands on some Accel or MSD wires and see if that does the trick. It is one of those weird feelings and plug wires have been known to cause all the symptoms I have been having, including knock retard in some cases. Also, I moved my plug wires around to route them as far as possible away from each other and it actually seemed to help a bit. The car responded better and pulled harder under boost. As far as knock goes it did go down a little bit but it could have been because it was a really cold night.

What do you guys think about my new plug wire theory? Regardless it is time for some new ones so the NGKs are done anyway...

There is almost nothing I have not tested and verified (except fuel pressure which I plan on doing on Thanksgiving during the day) and there is no real reason why my car should be running lean assuming the fuel pressure is okay. Everything reads perfect on the scanner, less my fuel trims, and it is built nice a tight. I'm anal when it comes to my own cars and believe me this GSX is done right. When you are just driving around not boosting it feels like a brand new car and when you are boosting it pulls but just not as hard as it should. Sometimes I actually feel the point where my timing gets dropped to nil holding the car back.

If it does turn out to have a fuel pressure issue, what is the cheapest regulator that will allow to decrease pressure that's not a total piece of crap. I know the aeromotive is nice but expensive, OBX makes one I think, and who else? B & M but it only allows pressure increase, which I don't want since I already have a Walbro 255 high pressure and a rewire kit sitting in my room waiting to be installed with a regulator.

Comments? And thanks again to everybody who is using brainpower to help me here. :thumb:

Your fuel is lean.

you don't have a fuel pump other then stock in? 550cc's. that could be a problem.

As for the wires, do a ohms test on them. Spec in general are no more then 22k ohms a wire.

i also get some nasty counts of knock when the car is still cold (43!!)... once its warm, i only get about 1 to 2 counts at WOT, 6000rpm, 10psi, stock fuel delivery.

i think we can safely say we're both getting some nasty phantom knock!

Ok I thought that the Mass air translator which you said you had was able to either self adjust or manually be adjusted for bigger injectors. If this is true which im almost positive it is then when you through a Chip in that is used to compensate for bigger injectors wouldnt the two be fighting each other. Possibly cancel each other out and cause and extremly lean condition with if it is runnin as lean at idle as you are in the logs then it could cause a hesitation at idle and it could deffinatly cause REAL knock not phantom knock I personally have no doubt in my mind that the knock your seeing is real knock going from your logs and seeing how lean you are. I would recomend try either adjusting the MAFT or go back to the stock mass air flow and see what happens when you just run the chip. Hope I was of assistence and Good luck let me know if i have helped you at all.

Well, here is another idea that hasnt been mentioned yet:

Could he be in need of a fuel pump rewire? I am using MMCd 1.8g on my Palm to log my 1g. I get no knock at lower RPM's but plenty up top(looks pretty much like the logs you posted). When I was looking thru the different sensors that MMCd logs, I noticed that there was one for the fuel pump. Mine was operating a little under 9v(arent fuel pumps supposed to run at 12v??) My thought was that the pump, operating at a lower voltage, is not able to get enough fuel to the engine, causing knock and terrible timing.

Is this a justified thought or am I way off base here?
