I have a 98 ecu in my 97 so emissions codes pop up. I removed the emissions periphery and get knock at 2400-3200 rpm. I richened the tune around there and it dropped but i'm still getting some knock. Should I be changing the timing, and what are the rpms and laods the egr normally kicks in and how do i compensate for it being taken out?

EGR is designed to open at light throttle and low/cruising RPMs. On vacuum operated EGR valves it's referred to ported vacuum. Quite honestly low load/low RPM knock isn't very harmful because cylinder pressures are low. You could back off the timing, I wouldn't try to fatten a light load knock scenario. I am not 100% but I think the ECU has to see <180° ECT and <2500 RPM before it will start interpolation between octane tables. Meaning it will retard timing when it sees knock. If some one can jump in, I am a 1g guy so I don't want to give incorrect info.

What are you using to monitor knock & tune? The rest of your mods? It could very well be phantom knock

my setups real basic right now. All stock except 16g and only doing up to 10psi boost, I want to get everything right before installed feul pump and injectors. I have a wideband to monitor afrs and use ecuflash with ceddy mods to tune. Looking at the evo forum, a couple threads say when egr is taken out in periphery timing is lost and it's supposed to be added back. But i get the cel for 3 counts knock even in first gear partial throttle sometimes...

Hmm... Not sure about timing is lost and supposed to be added back.

Check for loose bolts around knock sensor, check and make sure the knock sensor is tight and there is no ooze coming out of the back of it, as that is a dead give away at a bad knock sensor.

Have you done a boost leak test? Verified mechanical timing? What AFRs are you running when you see knock?
