Kind of a stupid question but, Can I use Unleaded Plus on my dsm?

Hey, it costs less. And is it better or worse than the regular Unleaded?

Both are worse than premium (92 octane) which you should always be running if your car is turbocharged. At best, you'll suffer from horrible engine knock which kills performance in your car. At worst, severe detonation will lead to a blown engine.

Remember, octane ratings aren't an indication of how well the gasoline will perform, but how resistant it is to knock and detonation.

Premium is the minimum of 91 octane.

You CAN run unleaded plus, but it will retard your timing, you'll lose performance and if the gas is bad enough you'll be hitting detonation like a mo-fo.

I think its a big no-no to run outside of specifications. The Car calls for 91 octane as minimum, so don't be a tight ass and try to save 10 cents a gallon cause in the long run it may cost you. :nono:

So I should use Premium then?

And how comes "I'll suffer from horrible engine knock which kills performance in the car. At worst, severe detonation will lead to a blown engine" by using Premium? Why should i use it then if it has such bad consequences?

No premium is the correct fuel .less than 91 octane could hurt your performance / kill engine if fuel grade is lower. :dsm:

You could get away with running 87 octane in your car, but just plan on driving the car like a grandma.

I've used 87 octane for the last 10+ fillups, but I never bring my car into boost and drive, well, like a grandma - and I get 33mpg...

It defeats the purpose of owning a turbo dsm. I feel that I am wasting what I have, so I am looking to sell the car. I already have my play toy - yamaha r6.

You misread what I wrote. That stuff will happen if you use anything less than premium.

Oh, ok. Maybe that's why my car hasn't been performing like it's supposed to.

But why does it say to use only Unleaded fuel on the tank lid?

There's actually a thread somewhere on here where someone figured out how much you actually save on a tank of gas by using 87 instead of more expensive premium. The thread was a pretty big argument. Like Defiant said, the amount you will be saving is VERY small, not to mention that you will lose gas mileage running low octane gas. Which in the end makes it as expensive, or even more. And thats without loss of performance and damage to engine.

I run Sunoco 94 Plus in my car, and if I don't run that, I get 93 octane

All pump gas is unleaded

x2

all 3 selections at most pumps are unleaded 87, 89/91, 93/94 around me, a few places replaced the mid grade with E85, or their race gas 104, some have diesel

How can you trust yourself to not go on a wild spending spree with that extra $1.80 you'll save on every tank of gas?

Haha, that's what I always say. I mean, it is more but it's not enough to really break the bank. It just sucks to know that you're paying more than other peoplle using normal.
