Now i have had 6 DSMs all n/t FWDs only. Now i got a 92 AWD Turbo. All the other cars ran just fine. With this one i have a few probs.

Yes I am a newb to AWD Turbos, but i am very capable to work on this.

Here is the list of things wrong.

1- Idle revs up and down over and over.

2- Rear diff sounds funny ( Clunks at slow speed )

3- Clutch drops the gear at top and picks up the gear at bottom.

4- Speedo is slow by 20mph

All my other cars were A/T FWD so this one is new to me

I thought id ask b4 i just took it all apart. Any help would be great.

I also plan on doing all the upgrades i have found here.

I have read threw alot of post, but couldnt find just these things. I found that these cars have low idle issues, but not a rev issue.

Thanks again for your help guys.

1. search for idle surge
2. try changing fluid and see if that helps. It doesnt sound too promising though
3. may need adjusted. search for it
4. maybe a new speedo cable is in need?

1. Idle surge can be a whole host of things, so I won't touch that
2. Can you describe the clunking? Is it clunking per revolution, only when accelerating, only when decelerating...?????
3. Sounds like a worn clutch pedal pivot, someone mentioned that's a common problem in one of my threads. If not that then maybe just needs to be bled...
4. Not sure what these cars use for speedo, if it is indeed cable driven then most likely it's a problem with the dash, or someone changed the speedometer gear (which I don't know why?).... If it's uses a vehicle speed sensor that could be the problem...

2. Can you describe the clunking? Is it clunking per revolution, only when accelerating, only when decelerating...?????

YES this morning it wont roll very smooth and starts to lock up I think. Im going to change the fluid and see if that helps.

If not ,,,has any1 had this issue? and what did ya do to fix it?

I have a '90 GSX and I experienced the same clunking at low speeds and hard shifts. My car has a welded center diff and the clunking stopped when my front U joint exploded. Had to replace the entire shaft because the yolk is trash, also if this happens at highway speed you may burry your AWD due to the fact that the drive shaft will fall in the direction of travel (Bad News). Check your center support bearings they can collapse and cause a similar sensation. In regards to your rev problems check your O2 sensor it will most likely be the culprit. By the way welcome to the AWD fam.:thumb:

Thanks, I found that the transcase was toast. My mech got a new one for me free from crysler. Under some kinda warranty. He also fixed the idle for me.

it only cost me labor -116.00:thumb:

W-T-F!!!!

Your mechanic just ripped you off.:notgood: It's not a warranty, it's a safety recall. You bring the car to Chrysler and they replace it FREE part and FREE labor. NO CHARGE!!!! If he knew enough to get the part for free, he knew enough that recall covers LABOR for free.

This is why I do ALL my own work. Hell he could have drove the car to them and had them do it and then drove it back and just charged you. No work, all profit.

I knew that there was a recall on the transfer case, what i didn't know was then when it went bad you could take it to a dealer and they would fix it. Does it matter how many times? or is it like a One time only type deal? I work in sales at a Gm Dealer but we carry just about everything else, is this something i could have done in my service dep? or is it a Chrysler only type deal?

Take your car to any Chrysler Dealership. Tell them you are here to have them fulfill the NHTSA 98V069002 recall. They should replace it free of charge. Now the NHTSA database says it is for Automatics, that is an error. It is for ALL AWD DSMS; 1g's and 2g's. Don't mention the automatic bit at all unless they do. If they refuse to replace it tell them you will be filing a formal complaint with the NHTSA and the Chrysler corporate office for not honoring a government mandated safety recall. Also inform them that they will be held responsible for any and all damages resulting from a T-case lock-up and tell them if death occurs that they could be facing not only civil charges but criminal charges as well. They shouldn't choose to risk going to jail over being lazy.

HOWEVER!!!! The issue is NOT the transfer case, the failure is due to the rear yoke. Tell them you want a NEW yoke installed on the drive shaft. Tell them you want it to be dust cover to be layered with JB weld. THIS IS CRUCIAL. Because it is the yoke that leaks. Replace the T-case and it will fail in a short period of time again. You will have to pay for this, but it is worth it. Because Chrysler only replaces the T-case ONE time. They put your VIN into a database after that Chrsyler will NEVER replace the T-case for free on that car. SO GET A NEW YOKE AND JB WELD THE BACK OF IT!!!!!!
