Hey guys im 17 and i really would love to get a 2G Eclipse GSX. But all the ones near me have a lot of miles on them. So i was thinking about buying one and completely restore it. I want to strip it down and rebuild it. Has anyone on here done this before? How much do you guys think this will cost me? I want to maybe get a crate engine or a rebuilt engine somewhere online, any suggestions where i can get one? And i would rather have a 6 bolt cause i heard about a crank walk problem wit the 7 bolt. Please post a response, idk if im going to do this but i really want to and i just want to here from people who have experience with dsm's.

oh man take the engine that is in the car and revamp it, and do it right i have owned my 95 talon for over a year and have less than 3 weeks driving time on it. I have owned my 98 eclipse gst since november and have not driven it since january.and the amount of money i have dropped on these cars i could have bought a very low milage evo8.

I am very mechanically inclined but my knowlage on DSM's is low to moderate. I know how to take stuff apart and put it back together but modding them becomes a hassle unless you know a thing or two about them.

Just my experience, hasnt been good, but everyone has a different, so take what all the guys are saying and, put it all in the pot, look at your situation, and then make the decision. and then you may come to a good conclusion.

here are pictures of a 95 eagle talon tsi i just found, the engine isn't running and the body/interior doesn't need any work. tell me what you think.

well it looks good but whats the deal with the motor? Anyway how much are they asking for it? Whatever you decide to do just take your time with it. Do it right the first time and it will prevent a lot of headaches. Good luck and keep us posted.

hes asking 4K for it, im gonna try to get him down to 2K prob not gonna happen though, im going to go look at it this weekend.

4k to 2k isn't going to happen, no matter what the car is worth. A seller might take 75% of he is asking, but not much more. That's called low-balling and he'll probably just laugh at you. (sorry to say)

Bicycles usually aren't awd, turbo'd, 20 years old and have been beaten on. He should know what he's in for.

You're missing my point. I hope he understands the price issue involved, yeah. But you're talking about how hard the mechanical aspects of a DSM are... its a car dude. DSM's are just like any other car, nuts and bolts. Granted there are more nuts and bolts in our cars but if he's mechanically inclined then why discourage him.

Go for a DSM (maybe not that one) Take you're time with it, do it right and have fun.

i know i wont get him down to 2k i was kind of kidding but w/e ill take a look at it this weekend and let u guys know

If you pay 2k for a broken car you deserve what you get.

Yeah, i just re read op's post. 100% agree with ya. If its broken, there's no way its worth 4k. (unless its loaded with good aftermarket parts) So on second thought, low-ball the heck out of him! 2k max

Even 2K is pretty high for a good 95 Talon. Wish I knew how to do the the linky thing but check out Talons on Craigslist in Daytona Beach. Most of them are pretty immaculate, modded, they run. They're also cheaper than what he's asking for a broken Talon. That will give you an idea of what an acceptable price range is.

We shouldn't be hard on this kid, a lot of you are tearing him to shreds and I read every reply. If he wants a DSM lets help him. If he wants to rebuild/restore a dsm lets help the sh!t out of him, thats what we're here for. To share our knowledge about these cars. I went from knowing nothing about DSMs to the point where I can talk to another so called dsmer and figure out if he's a complete idiot in less than 5 minutes. I have a plan for my car now and am working on it every day, if not physically on the car then I'm online doing research paging through one of the best sites on the internet, dsmtuners.com. come on guys lets help the kid out.

well the car has a gm maf aluminum radiator a gates timing belt i believe ebay headers a front mount innercooler short route piping 14b or 16 turbo and a relocated fuse box of what i can see in the last pic but that interior has been painted some alright rims it look like its dropped has a clean body so i would sa 2500 at the most not running but i cant see rust or oil eerywhere so thats good

This is on average the dsm pricing. The most you should spend on a 1g running is 2-3k, 3k being it's super clean, the most you should spend on a 2g is 4-6k, 6k being it's immaculate and has some supporting mods. Shells on the other hand go from between $500-2000, with 2000 being a rust free perfect car. If you spend 4k on a broken car then all hope is lost on you.

thank you LOL.

and like i said im going to take a look at this car this weekend and i talked to the guy and he said that he put a evo 8 ecu in it and then he said it just stopped working. so idk ill take some more pics when i get there. so how much do you think i should get him down to, i heard at most 2k but idk hes posting it for 4k and that already is a huge drop

OP, I'm with you here, I'll admit that I may have gotten took when I bought my 1998 GSX with mild upgrades(to discover that the guy that made to mods didn't have a clue what he was doing) at 150000 miles for $6800, and am now in the process of rebuilding the trans and engine, the rest of the drive line is in good shape, I started taking things apart when 1st gear went out on me, so there was $1600 to ShepTrans for a stage 2 rebuild, then I decided to take apart the engine seeing as it has 153000 miles on it to find that all 4 cylinders have been polished out(no cross hatching left but no ridge at the top of the cylinders) so I'm taking the block to Terhune Race Works in Indy to have it taken out to .020 overbore and checked out(basicly checking to make sure the block's still in good shape to use to rebuild) and then I'm buying a .020 over rebuild kit and putting it all back together with a few mods(to be determined) as I go. So in a nut shell, I'm in the middle of a fairly costly rebuild on a 2g GSX right now, but even though it's expensive, I wouldn't give this car up for pretty much anything

Conversely, I got my running, driving 1998 TSi AWD with 96k miles for $1,000. It needed a windshield.

I will keep it simple for you. Forget that talon. Your already starting out on the wrong foot. Why do you think that car is for sale?

99% of the time, a used/modified car that is for sale is someone else's "experiment". The owner of that car did a bunch of crap to it, put in an evo 8 ECU (supposedly) and god knows what else, and it ended in fail. People that know what they are doing in modding these cars GENERALLY dont sell them. People who mod these cars who DONT know what they are doing, and it breaks and turns into a money pit DO SELL them. Just sayin. :nono:

You would be better off finding a high milage run down stock car someone is unloading then buying someone elses project. Find that grandma or older lady who doesn't know what they are selling. Thats how you find a good restore project.

The only time those projects are GOOD buys, is when the original owner is laying curled up in the corner in a ball....with an empty wallet...begging you to take it away at a good price. And that's only a good deal if you KNOW HOW TO FIX IT right. :hellyeah:

All that being said, I definitely think you should get a DSM. They are great cars, and get a bad rap sometimes because of what most people do to them.

Also what do you guys think of this one? It has 110K miles on it and it's running, the guy is asking $6,500 for it, and here are the mods the guy has on it too:

act clutch with lightweight flywheel
EVO 3 G turbo 14 psi
Greddy Cat-back Exhaust
short shifter
HIDS
suspension
K&N air intake
drilled and slotted front and backrotors
18inch black rims with kumho tires

and here are some picture:

fmars62,
What is your definition of "restored"?
If you want to actually be driving your car than I would limit my restoration to making the engine reliable and body decent. Make a plan and wheel-n-deal where you can for parts. A lot of us have a soft spot for teenagers that want to do things right and will help as much as we can with advice, good prices, and even donations to the cause to worthy DSM scholars.
$4k for a non-running car seems a bit steep to me unless it had a huge list of extras that justify the cost.

Keep your eyes peeled, I found an AWD 95 for 500 bucks. Spun bearing and blow head gasket, but I had fun rebuilding it with a knowledgable DSM mechanic.

Got my '97 GSX for $475. It was running but was tired and due for a rebuild. I did a lot of mods all at once but I'm sure I could have done it on the cheap and had a great car for under $2000

hey guys im going to look at the white 95 talon tsi tomorrow morning, ill let you guys know what i think, and ill take some picture of it too. also what should i look for to see if only the engine is broken, how do i know if the transmission is good, and the ac and everything?
