I had jumped timing 3 teeth a few days ago(no bent valves) and had a new Timing and Ballance shaft belts replaced, plus water pump and auto tensioner, and for the last 2 days it has been great w/no problems. And tonight I stopped to get gas a heard a noise like a loose washer rattling, it sounds like it is coming from the Exhaust cam sproket area.

What could this be, and what should I say if the mechanic trys to charge me for another t-belt job(because he will have to remove it to fix whatever), I aksed him several times about changing all the pulleys etc.. and he did not, saying they were all in great shape.
I paid him $700 for everything.

Please advise

it could be lifter tick...a very common thing on 2g's. do a good "look through" inspection on the head/timing belt area while the cars running and see if you can see something loose or rattling.

i would check to make sure that your timing is correct.. if it is your exhaust side that is off a tooth it will make a noise simlar to a loud lifter tick..

when you stopped for gas, i'm guessing you shut your car off? sometimes on new timing belt jobs, starting the car can make the timing jump a tooth or so. i agree with gsxtuner...check the timing and make sure it's right on.

If the belt was installed properly you can just drive normally. I've never seen a properly installed belt jump. Newly installed or at 60,000 miles. It's plug and play as far as I'm concerned.

Remove your valve cover, inspect your lifters/cam followers to see if one may be hanging loose. If too loose they can come off the valve which can make noises like that. You would also have a loss of power if it was one follower. 2 coming off would result in a miss. You can start the engine with the valve cover off, however you will get a hot oil treatment everywhere. It can be cleaned off with soap and water and a high pressure sprayer. If not sure, take it to a tech and let them listen and give you some ears on advice.

Good Luck

i've personally never jumped a newly-installed timing belt, but i know a few people who have. not sure if it was the installer or what, but i just thought i'd point that out if it was installed wrong or something.

When I had my Non-turbo, I got a T-belt job done by a very good shop I had been to many times, and about 2 days later it jumped, bent 10 values. :notgood:

Understood. Which means these things will bite you if you are not absolutely sure of your install. However, if done properly, you should be able to jump in, start and drive away normally.

Good Luck

Does the noise go away say after 2k rpm? Auto tensioner might not be properly workin.

The noise stays at all rpm, It has no miss at all(smooth as glass), The lifters/cams look perfect. I have noticed tiny glitter like specs of metal on and around the T-belt area, so I know that somewhere in the lower T-belt area there is some grinding or hitting going on.
I also noticed the Big pulley in the center has a slight wobble now.

Any ideas what could be hitting. BTW, the noise is not very loud at all, But without a doubt is not lifter tick.

Also, the guy I had do it has done 100's on DSM t-belt jobs, he does dsm, rx-7's and subies. I am dropping it off on him in the morn, I just hope he does not try to hit me with any extra labor costs, If I need more parts that fine, but he is the one that said without a doubt that new pulley were not needed.

I've seen crankwalk, and this is not, I think it is a tensioner going bad, I searched for hours on Tensioner noise and the metal clicking sounds seems to be what it is.

No crankwalk, The car runs perfect, faster and smoother than it has ever been, just a little metal clicking sound. This car is so fast now, it scares the shit out of me sometimes, and I have plenty of fast things to compare it too, an 87 Grand National(modded) and an 05 Honda RR600, and neither get me like the TSI. :thumb:
