Hey everyone Im just really happy to announce I am now a member of the 1G family and with that comes the problems ;) I just purchased a 1g for $200 motor and all its a 90 Gst and well for starters here is the first problems,

1. The car sounds really wierd, when I turn it over the only sound I hear is the starter motor going, it just sounds like theres no spark or any attemp the motor is making to try and start, how can I check if the coilpack or wires are conducting anything, I tried grounding one of the wires and nothing no juice.

2. The maf is unpluged and there is a plug present with about 8 wires that looks like it should be connected to the maf but the size is not capatible the plug is too big plus the maf only has 6 pins, and this 8 wire plug is also kind of attached to the WS selenoid.

3. I took the intake off and I was checking for shaft play and I tried spinning the shaft the it is really hard I could not turn it, is it suppose to be like that when the car is off or is there something wrong with the turbo?

If pictures would be helpful I can take some to show what im talking about with the maf plugs.

The car has about 160k and it is stock, the original owner said the car just died on him and does not know what when wrong.

1. use the search button, if you got no spark, try in the search field (no spark).
2. get a chilton´s or hayne´s manual, they are great for troubleshooting.
3. a minimal shaft is normal on a turbo, but hard to turn, sounds like theres a problem, though, it has nothing to do with the car not starting up.
4. if you got no spark, it could be the coil that is bad, the igniter, or even the cam angle sensor (i had no spark once, and the problem was the cam angle sensor, also known as far as i know as distributor)
5. check the vfaq, there´s a lot of info there on how to do tests. (www.vfaq.com)
6. check the starter motor, it could be bad or a rebuild would be needed (as far as you described the problem, i dont think its the starter, because when they go bad, they usually just click)
7. make sure everything is plugged in place (i guess you would need a manual also)
8. check all the fuses (there´s a little box attached to the battery cable with 3 fuses) (inspect them carefully)
9. check that the battery is fully charged
10. take pictures it could help us identify the problem (if its wires related)

if you said, that the car just suddenly died on the previous owner, most likely is just a power problem. good luck and enjoy your new purchase. :thumb:

Ok ok here what I got so far i was up all night reading and searching and this morning i got up and checked the fuel first like im showing in this pic i got below i think i got fuel, then i checked the ecu for capacitor leaks the ecu looks very good no leaks, then i tested each ignition wire with a spark plug and gounded it to the valve cover and nothing no spark.

here are some pics of the plugs I was talking about

well. i just checked my maf and harness and they are both 8 pins. apparently your harness is alright, but the maf itself is questionable (where you got that maf from, are you sure is from a 1g?). anyway, that should not prevent the car from starting.

Ok heres what ive acomplished so far, I got spark now, there was a plug disconnected in the back of the ignition coil, and there is fuel deliver to all cylinders except the 4th one I think that injector is pluged up, so and tried starting the car and giving it gas when i give it alot of gas it kinda backfires and throws out white smoke and fire out of the TB, i tried starting it both ways with the intake on and with it off. ok so heres my next question i got a bad turbo unpluged MAF and no fuel to 4th cylinder my question is can i still get this car started like this atleast with 3 cylinders?

yes you can start it with 3 cylinders. smoke? it could be the turbo, maybe the blades are stuck? is it really hard to turn? that smoke from the Throttle body sounds like it could be the turbo. you can add some fuel to the cylinders, and try to start it that way. the uplugged maf, shouldn´t be a problem to start it. though, you will need it plugged in the long run. good luck, and keep us informed. :thumb:

alright. yea, thats what i thought, you need a turbo maf, because the one you got seems to be from a non turbo engine. now back to the car not starting. does the car cranks or acts like it wants to start? i think that it won´t start even with 3 cylinders if your turbo is stuck. so i would suggest, to get another turbo, from a junkyard for cheap, get a turbo maf, and inspect the coil also along with the distributor (also known as cam angle sensor). as i said earlier, it would be great if you had a chilton´s or hayne´s manual, it explains very well, how to test a coil, with a multimeter. if its bad, you need to replace it.

Update!!!! I had a guy that knows dsms and builds them and we ran some test and I ran a compresion test and here are the results, (cylinder 1=70) (2=40) (3=0) (4=35) so yeah im ganna start the overhaul process tomorrow.

alright bro, good luck on the rebuild. anyway, check what i said, the coil and cam angle sensor. a rebuild would bring back up compression, but it won´t make spark. if i remember right, you said you didn´t have spark in 1 plug. check also the turbo. have fun. :thumb:

Yeah I got spark on all 4, actually i thought i was not getting fuel to one of the cylinders but yeah that cylinder is the only one with compresion, but yeah now i just need you advice i was looking at the car and stuff and i started to wonder is its worth spending money on it, because i was looking at the 1g prices and they only sell for about 1300 on ebay and they got mods and nice engines so i mean im never going to get my money out or anything and i allready have my 2g turbo, and the 2g needs some stuff allready like tires $300 shocks and prings $400 timing belt $200 and yeah so im kinda confused, and i was looking at what 1g's wit broke engines sell for and damn I make a big profit right there. if you want to look at the car its in my homepage on my profile.

well quite honestly, ive seen most people in forums, buy new engines and mostly throw away old ones with a bunch of miles. i guess thats its cheaper to buy JDM engines and do a swap. in my country per example, labour is very cheap, unlike in the U.S. personally i would rebuild the engine, is not that hard at all, you just need some advice from the forums, tools, somebody to help you, and a manual (very important). My choice would be to rebuild because, i´ve seen that you can trust engines you have built yourself with patience, time, etc. i can bet you will save more doing a rebuild yourself than buying another engine for this car + labour. Now, if you have a 2g, and its your real choice to modify it, then go for it and sell this one, and even though 2g´s look great, 1g´s are the ones with very good horsepower potential. if money is an issue, i would just save money, and buy the parts one at the time. here´s a list of what you would need to do to get you started:

1. take out the block and take it to a machine shop so they can look at it and check if its fine (first thing to do) because if it has some wear, you would need to hone it or to rebuild the cylinders.
2. new set of rings (this depends if you hone the block, then you need to get oversized rings if you choose to rebuild then get stock pistons and rings)
3. pistons (if they are melted) again same as #2, depends on what you choose to do.
4. make the machine shop inspect the crankshaft (this is up to you)
5. if the crankshaft is ok, then i would get the whole set of bearings so you don´t drop the engine in a long time (of course, if you dont blow it).
6. new oil pump (optional)
7. new water pump (optional)
8. take the head to a machine shop to get it inspected (optional)

if the pistons are fine, just get new rings, and make a machine shop check the block, and thats it. ask the previous owner if he ever ran out of oil.

all this advice im giving you is considering you want to rebuild an engine, which in someway as i said earlier, is a better choice than buying an engine that you don´t know where it comes from or what was done to it. If you need more info, or advice, just PM me or post your reply here. Good luck. :thumb:
