Just did my timing belt had everything lined up perfectly and now the exhaust cam is off about half a tooth. Is this normal? Or should I re-do it.

Its not off to much but while your there be much easier to just re time it for piece of mind and you want correct timing for smooth operation.

Here's the easy way to do it.

Line up cams and put belt on, then zip tie in place.
Working clockwise wrap the belt around to the crank, now turn the crank counterclockwise 1 tooth, put belt on and turn crank clockwise 1 tooth. This will put all slack on tensioner pulley side of belt.
Wrap belt around tensioner pulley, tighten tensioner, remove zip ties, and you should be perfectly lined up

Peace of mind nothing. It's wrong. It also doesn't look like half a tooth as the intake appears off also. Put the crank dead nuts on and you'll see whats what. If crank is close in that pic likely intake is on but exhaust is one full tooth off. Easy to spot, easy to fix but you must fix it. Search my username for some writeups. This is a big pet peeve for me. 26 years of mitsubishi...I've done a few timing belts.

Not off that much? ROFL You may need some glasses.

Like stated that needs fixed. But you need to align the marks properly first, as they aren't right in the first place.

Dude you need to fix that ASAP and I suggest you watch a few vids on how to time a 4g63. Also I highly suggest getting the j racing timing belt tools, this will save you all the hassle and get you perfect set timing everytime. This is a interference motor you DO NOT want to mess up the timing, or say good by to your motor.

Im guessing you rotated 6 times then let it sit to set then rotated it again to make sure its fine! It will pull the exhaust cam a little as mine did even with the proper locking tool on the cams, was not as much as yours but . Was happy that everything was fine after I checked it, to be sure with the correct tension see if you can install the grenade pin freely when its under tension as too much tension will drag it back more naturally.

Seriously! This is straight up laziness. You need correct what you did wrong. Make sure both timing marks are at the level of the valve cover gasket. Place a small stick, screw driver, or pick against the notch on the exhaust side timing mark. Look for it to point directly or touch the valve cover gasket. This is how you will know for sure the two cam marks are line up correctly. Make sure you tension the tensioner pulley correctly so you don't jump time.

You need to pluck the stupid overheat indicator tab off the freeze plug too. That is by far the most stupid place to put it. I can not stand it when I see that put there by the machine shop. I work on a car where that stupid tab fell off and cut up the timing belt. That overheat indicator tab is will melt way below 190 degrees and is there for the machine shop to automatically void your warranty. Any how! Just get that crap off when you reset your timing belt.

Yep, re-do it. If this is your first time setting the timing it may take 10 to 15 times to get the feel for it. Take your time and learn how to do it right.

Set the exhaust cam a tooth below the intake cam. When the belt is tensioned the marks will both align, if you align them before you tension it will always pull the exhuast cam out a tooth. If you feel uncomfortable doing that you can always buy the tool that holds the cam gears in place and do it that way. I would not run the car the way it is.
