Ok so I just bought a 1990 Eagle Talon Tsi yesterday night. It's basically stock with a few upgrades and a few screw ups. It has a rebuilt tranny with 500 miles on it and a recent head gasket job. For upgrades it has an aftermarket boost gauge but I don't know if it works along with an aftermarket temp gauge. It also has a TRUE 3" turbo back magnaflow exhaust. It also has an ACT 2600 clutch. My dad test drove it for me and said it was a very good car and was worth the $1800 I paid for it. Now for the bad. There is A LOT of stuff just hooked up and rigged everywhere and I can't figure out where it all goes. The aftermarket boost gauge says I'm pushing 18 lbs but I doubt it. Now I've removed a bunch of wires that were not connected to anything. Here's some pictures and questions..

What do they cut wires in my hand go to?
Where does the coil pack bolt to?
Where does the other plug on the plate bolt to?
Where do the vsccuum lines under the thermostat go?
How the hell does the hood bar sit?

Thanks

New question.... I got the Check engine light on. So I pulled up the code and its Code 21- Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. The guy said he didn't think the stock temp gauge was working so he ran the positive from the gauge to a add a fuse. The gauge was only supposed to have 9v and was getting 12v so he said he cooked it. So he just threw in an aftermarket temp sensor. Now I fixed the temp and it works. and connected the wires back up but the code is stilll coming up please help =(

The Coolant Temp Sensor? as in not the gauge. The ECU needs to get a reading from that sensor in order to decide how cold it is when it tries to start. A lot of times if the sensor is bad it will not even start. You can go to Autozone and get one for like 10 bucks or so. I had to do it in my 2g not that long ago.

well I have got a lot sorted out but have a few more things to do. Surging idle, Crappy vacuum hoses, fuel gauge and gas smell...

So this is whaqt I did today. The previous owner ran a SS line from the motor to the tank. and theres an aftermarket filter in there too. Here's another weird thing. Took the pump out and its was half ok. The top og the pump which bolts to the top of the tank had 1 nut bc the other 7 studs were snapped. that's where most of the gas smell came from fixed it but then idk what happened. we had the float and ev erything out. we then connected it EXCEPT the ground and moved the float up and down and the gauge would move. we connected the ground and it just went to full and now stays there we unhook it it goes down to zero. so its either zero with no ground or full with a ground WTF! also take a look at the lines he ran...

This is the side of the tank on the drivers side that goes to the pump.

Finally into the motor

Gotta love it.

Wait, is this the fuel line coming from the tank to the rail? Or from the rail back to the tank (after the fuel pressure regulator)? When I ran my lines I just followed the brake lines up. Although having the gauge read full when the ground is connected definitely seems like a wiring problem. Do you know if the fuel pump has been rewired or not?

it goes rail to an aftermarket filter or something then to the pump in the tank. thats it. idk what happened with the pump. i took it out and it looks like a new pump. its also ziptied in. the wires were poorly crimped together and not much is really working. i need a new cluster anyway. I'm getting one for about $20. If it doesn't fix the problem then im gonna have to tear it apart one day when I get home from school.

Alright, I need help FAST! I went out this morning started up everything was ok went down the road to drop my brother and sister off came back and my front blinkers were just blinking like hazards. Just the front ones, any ideas? I need to figure it out before I go to leave for school

Honestly it sounds like the previous owner certainly made a hack job of your wire harness. You are going to have to do a lot of wire tracing to get everything sorted and working perfectly. I believe in the back of the haynes manual there are wiring diagrams, if not im sure a quick search on tuners will show you the wires that you are looking for.

Ok I opened the hood and took the fuse box cover off and the relay was clicking nonstop. So i unplugged the relay waited 30 seconds plugged it back in and it continued to click. So i went in the car unplugged the 10A from the inner fuse box for the turns. They never stopped. So i went back under the hood and took the fuse box cover off again, but once i took it off (the cover) they stopped blinking?!?!?!?! Now the work fine with the cover off. I'm in for a long haul...

There's also "HIDs" in the car but I can't see crap with the high beams on. the headlights are filled with moisture. jlksnhogublaskdnfkhksm

Welcome to used Dsm 101 ROFL You came up on the SS fuel lines. But not installed very well. I would definitely fasten that line down to the chassis near the drive shaft. It Looks frayed from hitting and keep the lines away from the exhaust in the rear. It being your daily driver is going to be the problem. Patience and you'll get it running good soon enough. You may want to meet someone local from the forums to come out and give you a hand. I'm wondering if you have any engine internals? Keep the pics coming they are really helpful.

ok so this is my plan. im gonna use the rest of my gas up and drop the tank. then gonna fill it with water and weld some threaded rod on the top since all the dolts are snapped. also anyone know where i can get the sending unit W/O the pump?

I got a friend who's gonna take a look. He might be on here but you may know him from a magaIne too. He's got a conquest tsi with fender stripes. He seems to know some things so um just gonna see what happens but thanks. I'm not sure if anyone lives in my neck of the woods..... New Windsor on beaver dam

Oh good you're a welder. Drill through the snapped threads and get bolts to bring up through the tank. It will be strong then. Any used tank you get will more than most likely be rusted out and have snapped threads. You can also shorten up those ss fuel lines and run them on the driver side of the car where the stock lines run. Also on one of the pics your holding a harness with cut wires where the o2 sensor plugs in. All those wires go to sensors on the thermostat housing. What wires are plugged in to the sensors? The junk yard will be your parts headquarters now. You can find hose sensors plugs on any dsm.

Tuesday night I reran the ss lines right along side the brake lines. 5 wires were cut and closed off. 2 go to a plug right beneath the therm. 1 went to a dingle plug by itself under the thermastat closer to the motor. An the other two I belive are supposed to go on the therm. BUT he put and aftermarket temp gauge in and I looked at a lot of pics and my therm is different? They show a plug coming straight out the top of the thermastat housing where mine comes out the side?!

OK new problem now. I haev those two wires left laying around (yellow/green and green) . I'm pretty sure they go to the temp sensor. The green one was a ground so I grounded it. The yellow/green one was to read the temperature..... I think. So I hooked the yellow/green wire to the aftermarket plug whcih is just a bolt and BAM perfect the idle went up to 1200rpm (its about 50 degrees outside) and it sounded really good. The check engine light was now off too! I was excited went to take it down the road for a text drive 1st gear was fine shifted to second and it died.. SO i stopped unplugged the wires and tried to start it back up nothing. Tried pop starting it.... nothing. Towed it back home and started going through the fuses. 15A under the dash was blown but nothing else (its for the cigarette lighter) anyone have any ideas?

Cancel that last problem....... the computer in the car came unplugged. where does it mount? it looks like it goes behind the radio but i have no idea the WIRES are holding it up right now

Wiring! You're doing well to track down a lot of the issues, unfortunately there is still a faulty wire somewhere. Yes, the ecu mounts behind the radio (plug side down). All the temp sensors on the thermo housing should plug into the ecu. Idle surge and shutting off is result of those wires not being plugged in.

sweet. so now i need a new therm. housing plug for the temp sensor and a oil level sensor plug too because right now there is some plug for a light jammed in there... AND i need new oil, temp and fuel gauges :( whats the normal operating temp? degreeige wise

does anybody know what the motor is supposed to be at degreage wise? and how long does it take to "warm up"

Also where can I get a fuel sending unit ONLY??? I can't find one anywhere. Anyone have a new or good condition used unit?

OK, can anyone tell me what the red spot does, and what the part is called or what it looks like???
I know that one s aftermarket but what does the stock one look like?

BUT there is no black plastic around the two prongs. just two tabs one horizontal the other vertical. Is this the right part?
