I recently purchased a 1990 AWD TSI :talon: and am already loving it's stock performance. I bought the Haynes Repair Manual and started reading many forums and FAQ's on DSMs. The only modifications I have done was doing the free mods (removing the fog lights, taking out the honeycomb silencer, etc.) and putting in a new intake filter.

A couple days ago me and my friend built a homemade MBC and tried to get it to work but it caused some problems. Mainly my car would experience a strange occurence once it hit above about 3500 RPM and/or 10psi. The RPMs would suddenly jump very high and go fast while doing so and when I would try to shift it would simply stay there. An example would be when I was in 2nd i hit 3600 rpm and it jumped to 5500 very quick and when I shift to 3rd it would just keep going higher instead of going down a bit. We are going to put back the stock controller today as I don't want to experience any more problems.

My main questions are what do you think I should do about this? I'm going to get a major tune-up soon and still have to change my oil and filter. The car also suffers from very poor gas mileage(around 13 miles to the gallon.) My exhaust and cat probably aren't working as there is a rattling in the cat when im stopped(guessing a hole in it.)

If I were to get all the maintance done and the problems fixed what type of new exhaust do you think I should get? I know I want a turbo-back exhaust and run a straight pipe as I had just passed inspection a week ago. Also, do you think it would be worth it to just get an electronic boost controller and just forget the MBC idea?

Any help would be appreciated as this is my first real car. My others featured a 89 cavalier and a 92 dodge shadow which both had about 120hp...combined. :thumbdown

so you did not experience anything like this at all before putting in the mbc? It does sound like the clutch is slipping but it doesn't make sense for it to just start happening all of a sudden. As for exhaust get the thermal r&d, true 3" and it has a nice low deep sound to it. Second regarding the mbc or ebc it all up to you, if you don't mind getting out of the car everytime you want to change your boost(which really shouldn't be that often) then just stay with an mbc. I personally would not spend the money for an ebc. You can also get a hallman mbc with a cockpit mounted boost control knob so that you can adjust boost from inside the car.

Yeah it didn't start until we put in the MBC, HOWEVER, we did install it the wrong way and it was working fine but then it started spiking and found it it was in wrong. We then put it in the right way but it was still doing it.
