I just can't seem to get my car started (starter problem)

Ok, ever since I got my car it has always started a little slow. Instead of turning over quick then starting, it would always just chug a little then fire up. After fixing a short that cost $500, replacing my battery, putting in a new alternator, and recientally installing a new starter, it plumb won't start! It still always started a little slow after I got the alternator, battery, and the short fixed, but after a couple weeks after putting my alternator in, it just quit on me and won't start at all so I bought a starter thinking it was that. After putting that in I plugged the positive wire onto the top part of the starter, tried to turn it over and it wouldn't start. Turns out the positive cable isn't even getting power. How can I solve this problem? The ignition switch is setting off the relay, and the starter relay is clicking just fine. What am I missing here?? Another wire going to the starter??? This is killing me, it's been a week since my car has ran!! Any help is appreciated!!

Thanks a bunch!,
Jake

I FINALY GOT IT!!! I was outside working on my car when the guy that put the starter in for me dropped by. He asked what I was doing and I said still trying to get the starter fixed. He points the BY wire out as soon as he got under the hood telling me he unconnected it and completly forgot about it. Connected it, and boom my car started. Thank you guys soooo much for helping me out. Even when I was a lazy idiot you kept helping me. Thanks a bunch and I will giving props to everyone that posted!!

Thanks for the last time,
Jake

I don't understand, we went over this several times, I spent a hour digging through the schematic thinking we were on the same page.

I'm glad it's fixed but can't help but think I'm losing my mind or in a different time warp.

Cheers,
GTM

Dude I have no idea what I was thinking the whole time. I have a BY wire coming off my negative post going into the cluster of wires going to my starter. I just thought that it was just splitting off the cable for some reason so I grounded it. Sorry for being sooo dumb but I REALLY appreciate the help guys!!

Thanks again!!,
Jake

This is a starter out of a 90 turbo. The field coil wire is coming from a different area, and will go on both terminals. Should I still go for the "M" terminal, or is this ass-backwards like everything else on the 90's?

Thanks!

No, that's normal. The sketch I used was reversed. Here's the corrected one.

The plot thickens.

I pulled this starter off a running 92, I need to put it on my turbo colt. The field coil wire is opposite what this thread says. When I test the starter on my colt, the starter gear will shootout like its supposed to, then it won't turn. The wires then get hot and start smoking. I pull the battery at that point.

So should I switch the field coil wire and consider the B and M terminals opposite? I'm so confused now, because that field coil wire is completely as is when I pulled it off my 92.

I figured it out. For the archives:

The picture above this post is 100% correct. The + goes to the right post, field coil wire on the left (as pictured). I was being a retard and assuming the field coil post was a -, so I was putting the - on there with the field coil wire instead of the bolts that hold it to the transmission like the - needs to be.

Haha, repost that for me.

Did this get solved?

I'm guessing I've only seen 1 or 2 selonoids that have been incorrectly replaced with a wrong part. It's important to note what you took off from where. With ditigal cameras so cheap take pictures BEFORE you begin work.

Hopefully noting got fried so bad you now have to replace wires for I don't want to know...

Note, it might be prudent to remove any incorrect pictures or drawings which were posted so others don't make the same mistake.

Cheers,
GTM

It seems the field coil wire can be on either side. The side on which the wire exits the motor casing is not an indicator either. Below is a picture of the starter I installed this morning.

If there is any question about which is the "M" terminal, it's the one with continutity to ground (the switch and motor casing). Also it has a metal plate under the nut that is soldered to a point near the exterior of the switch casing.
