Langley,
As the title states, I just bought a 1990 talon tsi with high mileage (200,000). I have around $3000 left over to put into rebuilding the engine, and I was wondering if someone could put together a good list of parts I should buy to get my best bang for the buck.

Also, the car currently idles funny, has quite a bit of turbo lag, and spits out some dark smoke at times. Could this be my MAF sensor causing this??

any input would be great, I have had a list of parts I wanted to get for it but some people didn't seem to like it. So I will post to all of you the parts I was looking at getting, and I would like some input on if I should possibly look at an alternative brand, and I would like to know which out of all the parts you would buy to stay in the $3000 budget. I will obviously not be able to buy all of these parts, but which should I start with??

apexi n1 exhaust and downpipe
straight intake (brand???)
KN Filter
HKS intercooler piping(no money for a fmic)
highflow diamond star manifold
dsmlink
apexi S-AFCII
manual boost controller(brand??)
autometer boost gauge
Pistons(brand??)
rods(brand??)
bearings(brand??)
gaskets(brand??)
walbro 255lph fuel pump
injectors(size and brand??)
ported 02 housing(brand??)
ACT 2600 clutch
short shifter(brand??)
slowboy LSD inserts

I am for sure getting the block hot tanked, then bored and honed. This is also part of the $3000

Could someone PLEASE help me choose some parts and give me a push in the right direction. Im still new to the dsm's and I hope some of the more experienced dsmers can help me.

I'm new to this too, but from what I understand, if you get the DSMlink you won't have any use for the apexi S-AFCII. And aparently those trying to keep to a budjet would have the rods bored from 21mm piston pins to 22mm. This will allow you to use 2g pistons.

i am in a similar boat man. For three grand... I would concentrate on the motor first. Overbore qouted me 2450 shipped for a new OEM build with a B-shaft elim. and ARP head studs. (550 core charge so you'd get like 350 back after you shipped your old motor)

I could not find ANYbody within 250 miles of me who would do the block work and then put the rotating assembly in for me

From there, I wanted to buy a FMIC, a new radiator, ACT 2100, and ACT Flywheel. That way no crud in the old intercooler or pipes is gone and no crap in the radiator. That will probably stretch your three grand. Everything else you wanted was bolt ons you can do at a later time.

You could also buy a jdm motor and freshen it up but it would only save 500. Mine was 1800 delivered to my door. 1300 before shipping at Noyas JDM motors

Check out punishment racing or CX racing for a FMIC.

LOL Only 3 grand? And you're looking for name brand shit that won't be better than its ebay counterpart. You should shop on ebay more. With all that stuff listed, look to spend more than 3 grand.

Tech Guide: 1G 4G63t Upgrades - DSMtuners
While you're at it, read the forums more. Shop around on our list of vendors. Why not just spend some of the 3g's on a long block built by one of them?

Sounds like you have a boost leak. Find a silicon coupler for the size of your turbo. Buy a PVC pipe cap, tap a hole and put in a tire stem. Clamp both ends so they don't leak and put it on your turbo and fill it up with air, listening for leaks and fixing them as you go.

Made one three days ago, total cost was 4 dollars. That leave syou 2,996 dollars left. I'm going to scrub your list a little bit...

apexi n1 exhaust and downpipe
Replace this with a Megan exhaust. Full thing cost like 500 bucks, just as functional and good sound. Apexi N1's are really name brand and a bit expensive for someone with a 'budget' in mind. Plus, the full 3" from just after the DP flange back is really nice.

straight intake (brand???)
Forced Performance has UBER nice intake pipes, couplers, and associated clamps for cheap. Great product! They're only for a 2g MAS though.

KN Filter
Nothing wrong with that.

HKS intercooler piping(no money for a fmic)
Punishment-Racing has a full kit for a FMIC that is well-priced. I believe it's on sale right now too! I had this kit, loved it. I sold it to someone else, and they love it. Good deal and easy to install while adding great function and 'eye-candy'.

highflow diamond star manifold
Find a stock 2g manifold on the classified threads (maybe 20 bucks). Works perfect for a budget. Also look into getting a 2g 02 housing. Both stock, both better than 1g versions and CHEAP!

dsmlink
You probably won't need this on a budget.

apexi S-AFCII
Good choice. Easy to tune and still affordable. Think about investing in a Wideband 02 sensor since you can more accurately dial things in with that and you don't need the DSMlink. Most widebands are around 250 dollars (almost 1/3 the full price of a DSMlink setup)

manual boost controller(brand??)
Take your pic. Most are cheap and provide the same thing. Nothing fancy is really necessary.

autometer boost gauge
:thumb: Definitely. Oil pressure and water temps are good to invest into as well.

Pistons(brand??)
rods(brand??)
bearings(brand??)

If you're looking at getting into a full rebuild of the motor, you might want to push your 3,000 dollar budget up a few grand and set aside a few months. I'm about 5 months and ~4,500 dollars into mine.

gaskets(brand??)
Topline has an awesome kit with just about every gasket ever needed on a DSM. Fair priced for someone who wants maintenance peace of mind. You can find it on Extremepsi.com

walbro 255lph fuel pump
Not a bad idea. A 190lhp pump wouldn't be bad either. Depends on your future goals.

injectors(size and brand??)
If you stay with an AFC, 650cc's are the limit, but you'll be okay with them for most smaller-sized turbos.

ported 02 housing(brand??)
2g housings are great, cheap, and easy to find. If you don't have emissions in mind, take a look at punishment-racing's O2 housing dump. It's fun! :p

ACT 2600 clutch
Good clutch kit, but I've seen 2 go severely bad in the last year. Granted, ACT owned up and hooked up replacements... but for a budget, Fidanza makes a very cheap clutch kit with just as impressive power-holding capabilities. I would recommend the Fidanza 2.1 for a budget build.

short shifter(brand??)
Not really something that is necessary in making a DSM fast. If you want a shorter, more appealing looking shifter... look at picking up a OEM 2g Shift Knob. It cuts down the overall height of the shifter, but makes the transmission feel a little more notchy (I personally like that feeling).

slowboy LSD inserts
I'm not sure what these are; some good prothane motor mounts would be awesome if you wanted to strip those old, busted ones out. They're like 80 bucks for a kit from Extremepsi.com... look into some sway bars too. :sneaky:

Overall, try pricing that list out and then seeing what you can do for a turbo afterwards. You should still have a decent chunk of change left for more things, or the ability to pick and choose brands a little more. Also a Evo 3 16g is the typical budget build turbo for the DSM first-timer. Packs a quick, snappy punch and pulls hard through redline while still bolting up like stock.

Goodluck! :rocks:

I'd suggest $3000 worth of maintenance, before you put on $3000 worth of performance parts and suddenly have $6000 worth of maintenance to do.

Exactly. Get that Car back up to Working order before you Even think about mods. You will be So surprised at what maintenace will do for performance!
If not... Well.. GL keeping that engine together. Its up to you buddie. :nono:

apexi n1 exhaust and downpipe
Yes its 85mm to 115mm at the tip great choice. I got mine from RRE Sam there can hook you up. Eclipse Exhaust System Upgrades

straight intake (brand???)
I went with Dejon Tool DEJON | Powerhouse

KN Filter
There good but theres Vibrant filters too there just as good but a cheaper price. EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

HKS intercooler piping(no money for a fmic)
Expensive Dejon Tool makes some good ones too

highflow diamond star manifold
Just get your ported

dsmlink
Great choice you wont need the AFCII if you get it. Link cost alot. An you'll need a eprom ecu too

apexi S-AFCII
Only if you dont get DSMLink

manual boost controller(brand??)
Hallman PRO MBC Applications

autometer boost gauge
Yes there good an I got a new one I just put in my car an Decided not to use it with the mounting bracket an I have an extra 10ft line for it. After putting it in I decided to get a ZT-2 with a AEM 3.5 Boost sensor.

Pistons(brand??)
Manley is what I used real good

rods(brand??)
Manley again

bearings(brand??)
Clevite EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Clevite 77 Tri-Metal Main Bearing Set: 1992-1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse 7-Bolt

gaskets(brand??)
Felpro EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts

walbro 255lph fuel pump
Yes the HP is better an the same price. you wont ever need to think about the rewire if you get the HP. EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Walbro 255 HP with Install Kit: Mitsubishi Eclipse 95-99

injectors(size and brand??)
FIC is a good brand I would go with 950's since there only a few dollars more than the smaller ones. Unless your going to use the AFC then only go 750's the AFC wont support anything higher than those. Mitsubishi DSM Talon Fuel Injectors- Fuelinjectorclinic

ported 02 housing(brand??)
Port yours unless your going to go with the EVO III RRE's Eclipse New Products

ACT 2600 clutch
It has a hard pedal tough on daily driving. The Centerforce duel friction is like stock feel an its rated as a 2500 when compaired to ACT. Road Race Engineering's Eclipse Drivetrain Upgrades

short shifter(brand??)
B&M an you'll never have any problems.

slowboy LSD inserts
That I dont know about I havent gotten that far yet.

Do your preventive maintainance first before thinking about upgrades. Maximize the potential of the stock engine. You'll be surprised on how strong they are. Are you doing the work yourself?

thanks guys, I think Im gonna put most of my $3000 into doing the engine internals and maintenance, stay away from mods until I have a sturdy platform to work from. Maybe Ill go with an exhaust and intake, but that will be it for mods for right now.
