It's time for my first rebuild during winter
Im a dsmer just like everyone else on here..
and i know people say don't attempt this but its a must

My 98 gst. i fell in love with. and her body is perfect
Original engine 180k.:hellyeah:

It's time. I want to do a stock rebuild .

What am i gonna need for this. Help out guys! i got a big picture of how to do most and got friends who rebuilt engines before but its my turn

:rocks:

well a 6 bolt will cost you the same except for a 1g CAS a 6 bolt flywheel and some more minor modifications to make everything fit search "6 bolt swap" for more info... but if you dont plan on going big power just rebuild your 7 bolt and do a blance shaft elimination. buy stock +.020 pistons and rings and some name brand bearings and either oem or ARP rod and main bolts. and maybe standard or 1 mm oversized valved(ferrea valves are decent) and new valve springs and retainers and upgrade to some bigger cams. 272/264 are a great combo... it all depends on what you want to pay...

you really need to use that search button and do some research!

Here is what Im doing with my current 2g winter build. It had 150k no knocks. Plans are stock rebuild with the exceptions of

* 3g lifters $80.00
* 1G CAS replacing 95-96 non adjustable ignition $50.00
* 272 Cams *regrinds $150
* BSE kit $55

Compression was insane for a motor with this milage there was no cylinder wall damage you could still see the factory cross hatching, no ring grooves at the top of the cylinder walls etc. Once we had the motor out and head off Just pull the pistons rehone standard rings clean things up, new gaskets, new water pump, timing components and back together.

This in my case was the most economical choice and turn around is minimal. No machine work no looking for a good crank etc.

I believe running total right now is around $500-$600 I have yet to order rings and a Headgasket but the $600 has those figured in. Not bad for a winter build and most of this can be done in your garage.

Some of these parts were not included as I just replaced the water pump and Rods and Mains about a month before I parked the car for the rebuild.

As far as time for this project Ive spent about 10-12hrs on it right now. Im down to the long block Im doing it on the weekends so It will probably be a few months before Im done but giving yourself plenty of time to shop for bargains and not go overboard is 80% of the battle!

Well. i would have been taking the engine out but my garage is packed with shit waiting for rents to get rid of it all.. but I was gonna take the engine out the past two days but its been pouring down rain...

Trying to get on it today..

only thing im doing different is .. Im getting machine work done to the block and head..
