ok... cars runs.... its quick.... feels good... cool... Im getting some semi-loud ticking noise from about 1500-3200 rpm... its not the normal tick, but almost a knock.... I know its the lifters.... my question is....

I have to go to work... I have to drive... I can bleed the lifters (or replace them) in a couple of days, but will it bend any valves if its like that right now?

Won't do any damage if the mechanical timing is right. Before you replace them why not try to use some crankcase flush stuff to quiet them down? The BG crankcase flush stuff works great and there's this stuff called Marvel mystery oil that works really well too. You could also use tranny fluid but that will take a little longer than the flush stuff. It would more than likely save you some time and money if you try that first. All of the things that were just mentioned work great. If you want more of an explanation let me know and I will. I've used all 3 ways with great results every time.

if you could give me some clarification, that would be cool... because they are preetttyyy loud..

OOO YEAH... I fixed that vac leak... I forgot to plug a couple of holes on the intake and the valve cover.... as soon as I did that, she fired right up....

cleaning and then soaking in oil and moving the lifters up and down... it pumps a little oil in them to prime them.... I dont know what my oil pressure is like, but I got a new oil pump, so thats not it and this is a fresh rebuild..... I will still check it later

Im probably going to try what spike said, I just got to wait for him to explain...

Ok if you use the BG stuff then all you have to do is pour it into the crankcase and run it for about 15-30 minuites and just change the oil. The detergents in the flush will get in and break down the dirt particles in the lifters that's clogging them up. This stuff works pretty good and it's quick to do too. The Marvel mystery oil will be easier to find than the BG stuff as any advanced auto parts should have it. It comes in a bigger red bottle and it's alot thinner than the BG stuff. It's kinda like pouring gas into your oil but it's not gas just thin like it. You use 1/2 in the crankcase and run it just like the BG stuff for a little while and then change the oil. The other 1/2 of the bottle you just put into your gas tank and it cleans the fuel system and injectors real good. If you want to use the tranny fluid it's going to take a while longer but will work almost just as good. You replace about 1/2 quart of oil with 1/2 quart of trans fluid and you're going to have to actually drive the car for a little while. Somewhere between 100-200 miles should do the trick. But as soon as they stop ticking then give it about 20 more liles and change the oil. The tranny fluid works good but not sure how te detergents in it will work on the baked on oil sludge that can build up in a motor because the detergents aren't as strong in that than the other things. This is also why it takes longer to quiet down noisy lifters. I've used all 3 ways and all 3 work great just some take longer.

There's many uses for tranny fluid that can save you time and money. You can use it to get corroded lock cylinders to start working again by soaking them it a little fluid for about 20 minuites and doing nothing else. It can also be used to free up pistons in a motor that sat for a long time and wasn't preped for sitting and the pistons rust to the cyl walls. There's more but I can't remember all of them. Very versitile stuff IMO.

ok... your the man!! im going to do this when I get the chance.... my new motor only has about 3 miles on it (shhibby!!!), so Im going to wait a couple more miles before I change the oil again.... Does the "big red bottle" stuff really say to use half in the oil and half in the gas?

Yeah that's what they say to do. You don't have to use it in the gas but I was just telling you that so you don't put all of it in the oil. Like I said it's really thin stuff and the detergents in it are really strong. I think they might sell a smaller bottle of it too but I just get it through my work and when advanced brings it up it's always the big bottle. Being that the Marvel will be the easiest thing to find unless you know of somewhere that sells BG stuff I'd use that. But if you can get your hands on the BG stuff quickly I think that would actually work a little better. Not to mention you feel better about dumping something with the viscosity of oil into your oil rather than something that looks like water.

the fact that it looks like water doesnt bug me at all.... its in the chemical make-up, baby... haha.... that for sure be easier that popping those damn VLA's out.... thanks alot... I will post my result

yeah... on the intake manifold and one of the PCV valves on the car was leaking.... I just plugged them up.... Really solid vacuum and no boost leaks... My friend did the test at his house when he was bored and I was not there and he said it had no boost leaks..... he obviously did the test wrong, but idunno how...... either way it started no problem as soon as I plugged those leaks... broke in the rings.... feels nice and solid.... feels a little sluggish.... I am assuming the noise coming from the valvetrain is pulling timing... could that happen... I would assume that because if I can hear it, so can the Knock sensor... does that sound fairly accurate?

Maybe. But the knock sensor is tuned to detect the specific tone of actual knock. Not just engine noise. There is a chance that the tick is at that right frequency. You might want to double check your ignition timing though. Don't forget to ground the terminal by the firewall to set it though. Should be set at 5* with the terminal grounded.

I havent timed it yet... I marked the cas housing before I took it off... its set right back there... my friend timing gun broke and I have to do that today.... just got to find a timing gat.... it cant be too far off... my friend has a Snap On scanner... I could probably hook that up and see if its picking it up as well.... Im also running 9:1 CR pistons and only running 7 psi for the break in.... thats probably why it doesnt feel like 200 hp yet... I have to get my ECU remapped for my ignition timing before I can go past 8-9 psi....

in short, I will check the knock sensor and the ignition timing... probably do the "big red bottle stuff" mod on Wednesday.... As long as I dont get on it, I dont think I will break anything....

bad battery.... it was just dead as shi+.... the noise in the valvetrain kinda quited down, which makes me happy.... on weds. im going to get that additive stuff and see if that will clear up that sound some more.....
