Is turbo blown or not?

Hey guys well i turn my car on and whiteish smoke comes out, and then at idle white smoke is coming out as well. Does this mean my turbo is gone. How can i check if my turbo is a goner?

Is there anyone here with a used t28 because i just need a used turbo not looking for a 16g or anything because i'm selling the car. Or if you any of you guys have a turbo that will fit let me know.
 
Disconnect the hose on the cold compressor inlet, put your finger in there and try and wiggle the blades. If you have shaft play that is noticeable, you have a blown turbo. The smoke is also a good sign that your turbo is blown.

Search the classifieds for a turbo.
 
Shaft play meaning if wiggle your fingers and the wheel is loose it has shaftplay? Or it is not spinning properly ?
 
A 14b will work with an install kit, search much?. Why not put a T-25 on it if you're selling it anyways?

Shaftplay in/out and side/side play is bad. Some play is normal and tolerable, but you will notice if there is too much movement. If it's not spinning freely, you also have a problem.
Is the smoke thicker when driving or getting into boost?

You should go ahead and delete those phony dyno numbers as well.
 
Argh, good call about the install kit. I missed the second part of the post. Yeah, 14b with install kit works fine, its all bolt on replacement.

+1 to using a t25, it will cost you less.
 
Okay so looks like i gotta find a t25. If there anyone on here who has a spare one lyin around please pm me!! Seems like i have some up and down shaftplay, side to side seems to be fine...
 
Okay so i only have some shaftplay up and down, not side to side. But some people say a little bit of shaftplay is normal, it doesn't seem too bad when i go up and down. Could it be the seals? You guys think the turbo is causing this smoke? Smells rich and happens when im at idle or boosting. Kinda oily in the intake hose.... ? So im guesing seals?

Now you're describing symptoms of a boost leak, have you done a boost leak test?

White smoke equals burning oil, so maybe you have a blown turbo and a boost leak.

Is the turbo making an unusual whining noise when boosting? It sorta sounds like a supercharger whine. Does it feel like you have lost power? If so, it's blown.....
 
Hmmmm my friend said it might be coolant too. What could be wrong with the coolant? When it Boost it makes no noise and i actually see no smoke. I played with the turbo and there only a little bit of shaftplay. So im guessing coolant, but like said what could be wrong with it? How check the coolant? Antifreeze levels are all fine. The cold/hot meter is perfectly in the middle. I notice i experience this problem when the car is running for a bit.
 
Your probably leaking coolant into the cylinders if it is smoking white. Do you hace oil in your antifreeze and do a compression test. I'm thinking maybe a blown headgasket.

What do you mean hace oil in antifreeze. How could coolant get into my cylinder? Coolant are you meaning water some how got in my cylinders?

I don't have the tool too check compression..
 
Sometimes oil burns white or grayish, most notably synthetic oils like Mobil1.

If the smoke were indeed coolant, it would be noticeably sweet-smelling.
 
first off, it sounds like either a going out h/g or else you are somehow getting coolant into the engine... and secondly please remove the fake dyno numbers as it makes people think newb and not want to help as much. I doubt that the turbo is completely shot... it will puff blue. i would pay the $20 or so to either buy a comp. tester or get your compression tested.
 
my bad guys, i know gray/blue smoke is oil, i was drinking when i posted that and didn't think twice about it.........

Vic, check your coolant overflow reservoir for oil........and get a compression test done. If you don't know how to do it yourself, ask the dudes at a part store.....or follow this link:

Quick Question is the coolant overflow res. where i put my antifreeze in. Or that plastic little bottle thingy near the air intake.
 
Okay guys i think i found the problem!! I took off the spark plug cover and i saw oil in near the spark plug wires. My bro told me he spilled some accidentally and i guess some went in 2 of the spark plugs. I cleaned up all the plugs and inside of them seems like the problem is gone. So you guys think that white smoke could of been that buring oil in the spark plugs?
 
It wasn't that much oil the 4th cylinder had a bit and cleaned it up with a rag and got whatever i could inside and cleaned the spark plug. 2nd was little bit dirty and 3 and 4th were perfectly clean. So far so good but i will let update you guys...hopefully this was the problem:coy: It was coming out of the exhaust...
