So I bought a evo3 big16g off a member on here. He said it was primed, and ran for a few miles. I just got it today, cleaned it up (did not disassemble the center section), and removed a broken manifold bolt. I left it sitting in my room, and found my turbine wheel covered in oil, and it leaking down the inside of the turbine housing. Is this just because of it sitting with a tad bit of used oil in it? Or is the seal shot on it.... Let me know guys...

ehh hard to tell. Does it have in and out play. looks like metal shavings on it. If it was ran with the shavings more then likely it ruined the seal.
 
oh ok. hook it up and give it a try. Iv bought used turbos, and people saying they were good. No shaft play, and then few miles down the road poof. Your just gonna have to hook it up and see.
 
If you let it sit with the turbine wheel facing downward (compressor wheel pointing toward the sky), this is not uncommon. Any oil in the center housing will drain down and find it's way between the seal and turbine wheel as there is always a gap, much like a piston ring fits loosely into a piston. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the turbo.

Looking at the turbine wheel itself, it appears the carbon that exists is dry and dark, telling me the turbo didn't burn a considerable amount of oil while it was running and the dark, sooty carbon shows the car was tuned a little on the rich side or the turbo never saw much boost.

There we go. Thats what I wanted to hear. Thanks jusmx. I face the turbine wheel up, and let the oil dry. Thanks again, whooooooooo thank god its not blown haha
 
I'm not saying that there ISN'T a chance it's blowing oil past the seal, I just don't see the proof in your example. Many times during the rebuild process guys will neglect to clean the portion of the housing where the seal sits, or they'll shove the turbine into the housing with no regard to whether the seal is compressing into the groove properly.

For these reasons, I don't let any turbo leave my shop without being rebuilt- just so I know what has been done and can offer my customer 100% confidence that it will give them the same trouble-free operation as a new unit.

But seriously- if I fill the cartridge on a fresh rebuild and let it sit with the turbine facing down, it will eventually cover the wheel in oil the same as your example....and that's on a freshly-rebuilt unit.

I'd throw it on and run it. :thumb:
