hey, im in the process of replacing my turbo, my t-25 is gone...and i was able to pick up this 14b locally for the price of a meal at hooters, from the outside everything looked really good, but after taking it apart im having some second thoughts about putting it on my car...just thought i'd get some opinions from fellow dsmr's

i guess my question is does the ends of the turbines being chipped off like that render the turbo unusable or will i just lose a little power, and i do believe that ill have to replace some of the internals, it wont spin real freely(i cant blow on it to get it to spin at all, but by hand i can without too much force)

***ok, i just picked it up and went over it agian...the shaftplay as far as i can tell...NO in-out....and i dont know what too much shaftplay is for side-side, but it definatly has some...so im assuming with that to replace the bearings...im thinking that this may help it spin a littly more freely too?? thanks for any input

Every 14B I've spun by hand has been harder than any other turbo to spin..They could all have been trash though. That said, even blowing, it would take quite a bit of force to spin it, so don't judge whether it's gone or not by that. You talk about replacing the internals of the turbo. If you plan to do that, I would just advise for you to either upgrade turbo's to a 16g, or buy another used 14b off of someone. They're fairly simple to find, you should be able to pick a good one up for around 100-200. Rebuilding it(right) should cost more than that.

Depending on your goals with the car, it may be in your best interest just to send that turbo off to be rebuilt. A 14b rebuild shouldnt cost you more than 200$ (or in that realm) and thats still cheaper than buying any form of 16g. After having the turbo rebuilt, you wont have any questions or worries about the turbos reliablity/performance. Just something to consider.

did you have the compressor side connected to the turbo housing (and tight) when you were checking for play? If you have no in and out then that turbo is good in my book. 14b turbos are very long lasting turbos, I have one that has plenty of shaft play, chipped comp. fins, and we watched it glow one night from running with no oil (blew the motor and spewed all oil out before we realized it and pulled over). It smokes like a james bond film prop but still runs and boosts fine.

jeeze was there a rock or something bouncing around in the turbo hoseing?? Those blades are kaput.

I had my 14b rebuilt awhile back and it cost 250 and that was only seals and balancing. You will need a new turbine wheel and that will add to the cost. For sure buy a different 14b.

yeah, i actually have the compressor wheel and housing on so theres a little side to side, no in out

The white marks on the middle of the chra look to be from the blades rubbing against it. Is this what I am seeing? With the outside of those blades being a rough as they look, I would have to think it is now slightly out of balance. With the price of used 14Bs, you can probably find a different one for next to nothing, again. Actually I have an old 14B laying around (unsure of condition, it came with a motor I bought) that I can check out for you. If the blades seem ok and everything else checks out, Ill consider giving it to you, granted you pay the shipping.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Eventually the blades would probably erode through the cap, which I think would lead to some serious problems.

as I said in my first post to me it looks like the blades have rubbed the housing, and if it have side to side play that is ###### the case. Also all of the 14b's I have had off spun freely just like any other wheel. So if this one is hard to turn I would say the bearings are shot and you will need a rebuild or another 14b.

so is it completely unusable or will it lose power....i want to know the answer to this aswell

well that question if tuff for us to answer over the net with out getting or hands on the turbo, how much shaft play is there I cant say with out seeing it. Will it blow smoke cause some thing if for sure wrong cause its easy to spin. But then again maybe it will be fine so the whole is it usable or will I just loose power is pretty much one big guess if you are in doubt send it away and have it looked over to be certain.

I am not talking about shaftplay, I am talking about the way the turbine wheel has been damaged. I have a turbo that I picked up for 15$ and it is in the same condition. I was going to sell it as completely junked, but if it is still working I can get some money out of it.

hmm maybe you didnt read my post so I will sum it up what I am saying here is there is now way for any one to tell you for sure if its toast or not. To me with the shape of those blades I wouldnt pay nothing for it, I dunno maybe some one would. I asked about the shaft play cause like the other post said if its bad it will eat its self alive!!
