Is there supposed to be oil on and around a 1998 Cam Angle Sensor?

I suffer from the dreaded 7 bolt P0300 Random Misfire when cruising on the highway. I have dismantled the entire CAS assembly before to find the route of the problem. No luck.

But I did noticed there was oil in there. In the CAS housing and on that part with the notch in it (I imagine the notch in the metal that rotates with the cams is there for the magnetic nature of the sensor itself to detcet when and where the cams are at a given time).

I also just (5min ago) removed the sensor only from the CAS housing and it too was coated in oil. Nice clean mobil 1(did an oil change last week).

I've read numerous times posts that would indicate this area should not have oil in on or around it. Is this true? Maybe thats why I'm having the misfire?

But then again maybe oil normally gets on those parts. they are, afterall, connected directly to the intake camshaft which is always coated in oil.

Interesting replies.
Thanks for getting back to me though I'm not sure what needs to be done now, if anything.

Thanks for referenceing CAPS for me. There is an o-ring for the sensor itself, near that 10mm bolt that holds the sensor in place. As for any other kind of gasket or seal I never saw one when I had the entire assembly apart.
where does it go, exactly?

I just looked through the CD manual and I don't even see the o-ring you described, nor do I see a seal either. However, in CAPS the number pops up as referenced with a definite distinction between the (2) front cam seals and a totally different number for (1) rear seal on the intake cam (and it could very well be an o-ring only). Since I've never had the need to take mine apart, and looking at the picture, it appears that it goes inside the CAS housing against the head. But the pictures are certainly vague at best.

I know this thread is old as hell. But I found oil in my cas, quite a bit in there. Is this normal? I didn't have any misfires or anything but I just want to make sure that its somewhat normal...
