so im crusing at a kewl 75 mph ( top down :thumb:) when all of sudden i loose power. the engine didnt cut off. i pull over and well i have tons of white smoke. i pop the hood to find out that my exhaust manifold is cherry red. after i break out the flash light i realize that the dip stick is partially pulled out. wtf happened!!! rpms were good and the water temp was good. honestly i never payed attention to the oil gauge. anyway the whole engine was coverd with oil that was throwen out threw the dip stick. as far as i know the oil systems are not pressurized like the cooling systems. Right? I towed the car home and the next morning put new oil in it. ( it was bone dry) there is no water in the oil and no oil in the water systems. does that mean my head is still good? the car runs and idles at 900rpm, nice and steady. as a result of all this i got a exhaust leak at the cat and a lot of white smoke when i rev. the car runs like crap now. pleease help. where do i start? a friend of mine said that my cat might have gotten clogged causing pressure to back up and throw the oil out the dip stick, does that make sense to anyone? I wanna get back on the road. thanks in advance for all your help! i will check the compression and post up the results....its a 97 gst spyder, bone stock with the exception of a hks cat back exhaust and a injen cold air intake and bov.

Hope you can solve the problem soon.
White oil always represents you're burning oil somewhere. :)

with no compression couldnt it be a valve thats messed up? and loss of power could be jumped timming and bent a valve. when running did it knock or anything.

Well that would explain no compression in cyl 2, but why the oil in cyl 1?
I've been getting home from work really late but i plan on really breaking it down this weekend. I will have more info then.... Thanks for all the much needed advice.

i was just saying if could have walked it was something to check because what he described is what happend to mine the exact same thing about a year and a half ago then i did a 6 bolt swap thats why i suggested it.

also the dip stick keeps blowing off. Someone suggested it might be a bad pcv valve. I'm not sure how to check that, but i will look in the FAQS

Its possible that an oil squirter got clogged up for that cylinder and wiped out your rings. Did you wet test? Also is the "ticking" top or bottom end? Its possible you may have dropped a valve. If you bend valves in 1 cylinder there is a very good chance they are bent in others. Dip stick popping out is a normal thing for these cars when they are under load. And I would check your block and if its good do a nice build on it. From what I know, Slowboy is running a sick deal for tax return season. Hit them up for maybe a short block or at the very least pistons and rods. Good luck man!

The dipstick popping out is typical, but not normal.

The dipstick blows out because of excessive crankcase pressure. Not normal crankcase pressure. Even with good rings, there's a small amount of blow-by from combustion. Some of that pressure leaks past the rings and into the crankcase.

High crankcase pressure causes oil leaks, seals to blow out, valve cover bolts to loosen, dipstick poppin' out, and restricts the flow of oil in the motor because the air pressure fights against the fluid pressure. It also decreases how well the rings seal.

If your stock car pushes the dipstick out, you've got a major problem. If a modified car blows the dipstick out, it's less of a problem because there's good reasons for it. With added boost and compression comes more blow-by. If you're having problems with your dipstick, you should think about upgrading your breather system to something less restrictive than the factory setup. If you don't, eventually you can expect to leak oil from everything that's bolted together.

My bet with the oil in #1... your valve cover gasket blew out and leaked oil down onto the plug.

im not sure what a wet test is.... the ticking is at top. Its very low you really have to pay attention to hear it.

i pulled the cover off the timing belt. The notch on the gear are good. They both point in the same direction. So i guess that rules out the bad timing for the valve. Now i have to check for bad valve that might be stuck correct? do i have to pull the head out or can i just check that by removing the valve cover?

Also i replaced the pcv valve to... now its just the compression on cyl 2 and white somke out the exhaust.

I would be interested to know what this could be. I am having the same problem, I have check the timing, replaced the PCV valve, and checked the o-rings on the dipstick. The next step for me is compression testing and if it has bad compression then what next, pull it apart and start a rebuild or what?

A wet test is when you pour a cap full of oil in the cylinder, and then check the compression on the cylinder. If the compression on that cylinder goes up, then you have bad rings. Also, if you do end up rebuilding it, I can help you with it. I live 40 min from San Fernando. I just finished rebuilding my engine, and it was a pretty easy process if you label everything while you're taking it out.
