Thinking of buying a 2g gs-t a/t and am very concerned about crankwalk. Is this a problem I need to worry about?

It's possible, but comapred to the number of 2G MTs, it's unlikely.

agreed. Crankwalk has to do with alot of pressure on the crankshaft. This is often caused by the clutch engaging and disengaging. With an a/t car.... we dont have a clutch exerting this type of pressure so thats why i think it occurs less on a/t cars.

now there are a few reports of some automatic dsms walking.... anyone have any incite to that?

i own a 98 automatic gst. crankwalk is not a concern on my mind with my car.

Sorry, wasn't trying to worry anyone with this issue but it's something I have to look at before thinking about shopping for a 2g a/t. I was reading the talon digest achives concerning c/w and man it's rough reading. I definately wouldn't even consider a 2g m/t but I'm hoping the a/t cars are safe in this area -- I've had my 1g for 8 yrs and dumped so much $$$ into it that the last thing I would need now is to get a car with c/w problems.

I think even for the MTs the crankwalk thing is blown wayy out of proportion on the internet. I have friends with aftrermarket clutches and they havent seen the big CW yet, I'm worried even less than they are.

I wouldn't let CW discourage you from buying a DSM, especially an auto.

Mine walked at around 76,000 miles, but NO it is not common in an AT. Also keep in mind that my car is modded and raced which I am sure helped elevate the situation. Now there are Clevite bearings in there, ARPs, no balance shafts, center dowel alignment kit from MachV (hey, worth a try), and had the crank turned and polished of course. I still do not worry about it even though it happened to me once. I half expected this kind of thing to happen once I started to mod the car, didn't expect crankwalk but oh well.....I love these little cars.
All in all I would not worry.

BTW, if funds allow and you are building up a 6 bolt motor IPT has a kit for the flex plate so you can use that 6 bolt engine.

I didnt even have the thought of CW in the back of my mind when I had my gst with a ACT clutch and flywheel and several mods....let alone with a non pressure exerting a/t DSM

i put an act 2600 on my 2g m/t tsi last summer and now it's walking... only 100k miles total. im swapping the motor for one off an A/T tsi next week (80k miles), so hopefully this one wont walk or wont walk as fast =/

there was a time i thought i was safe from CW... then i started modding...

So you think that a 7bolt from a auto dsm will not crankwalk? I think you have been misinformed or read something wrong. A 7bolt in a MT has the greatest chance of CW as to a 7bolt in an Automatic the chances for the 7bolt walkin is really slim..You should get a 6bolt, there is no point in gettin a 7bolt again.
