my tranny all of a sudden today, will only stay in one gear, i don't have low, 2nd or over drive. only 3rd. i also have a cell code of p1600. need help asap.

I think that the tcu may be fried, but idk.

Thanks Garrett

I would take the cover of the TCU and look inside to see whats going on..Burnt smell or bleeding caps....There is a link to a place that rebuilds them on this site..Search for a post in my name and it will come up...

NO I don't think the TCU is bad.

More likely what happened is the TCU went into LIMP MODE. It allows you 2nd and reverse gear only. When it does this it means it has detected a problem with the transmission. Could be low fluid, bad soleniod pack, input/output speed sensors.

Codes from the TCU are usually dealer specific and cannot be read by a generic scan tool.
A transmission shop or the dealer can check the TCU codes for you.

Looks like P1600 is a comunication error with the TCU. Check your wires to the TCU. Make sure it's pluged in tight.

Also before you go buying a new TCU take a picture of it and write down the number on it. I have the TCU out of a 1995 TSi...it may work for you.
