Well my experience with racing against cars with big turbos T4's, has been even tough i got a 14b i beat them since form a first gear roll i spool up quickly and get 3 cars ahead easily, thing is my crank spun a bearing, so i'm going to built up my engine or get a 6-bolt, still i plan to run a bigger turbo, either evo3 or 50 trim, but for the price of an evo3 i'd rather get a bolt-on 50 trim.

Thing is i don't want to be losing because of lag.

What's your experience with it? comment?

Thanks

If you're rebuilding the motor anyway do a 2.3 with a 50 trim. My friend has one and it spools like my car but goes way faster.

Im building a 2.3 as well, and Im also pondering the turbo setup. Full race internals will be used, as well as an upgraded tranny. The car WILL be driven every day, so driveability is a BIG issue. The evo3 seemed like the perfect turbo; good driveability, good spool, cheap, and is relatively fast. But everyone seemed to wish they got a 50 trim, and wanted more.

I understand that you will always want more, but I dont want to buy an evo3, not like it and not have used my engine for its full potential. The 2.3 will spool the turbo a lot faster, and with an evo3 it would spool insanely fast. But why not use that spooling power to use with a 50 trim?

Then therse the issue of gating: external or internal? Internal could possibly lead to boost creep/spike, but externals are definately loud. Is it possible to "muffle" the external gate's sound? Or does it come on ONLY when under high boost? I dont want cops on my ass for the gate as well.

Will the driveability with a 2.3L 50trim externally gated in a small city, as well as highway and large city use, be horrible? I mean, would that be TOO much power? I suppose I could just turn down the boost.

So, bottom line:

Is a 50 trim TOO much for a DAILY driver? ( I DO mean every day)

Internal gates are rather large on a lot of 50-trims, and many people do not experience creep with them.

Externals can be routed back into the exhaust.

No, it's not too much power. I know plenty of people running 50-trims and larger on the streets, every day, to and from work.

Thanks for the quick reply. I kinda forgot about routing it back into the exhaust... *duh* :shhh: .

So, in all estimation, at about what RPM would, say, a bolt on externally gated basic 50trim spool at? Now the only concern with the 50 trim is:

*fuel delivey ( 190lph used now)
*FMIC (evo8 FMIC used now)
*exhaust (2.5inch used now)
*transmission strength
*tuning : Could I tune SUCCESSFULLY with a MAFT?
*cooling (bigger FMIC=less cooling)
*cost....'nuff said

dont go 16g. waste of money. 50 trim is very streetable. You wont be fast at 15lbs. Turbo is useless under 20lbs, much much more efficient running 21 or 24lbs. spool up time isn't that bad. I tune with a maft, but im getting an safc soon. It works ok, but not perfect. With the supporting mods, you wont be beat by the fastest 14b or whatever.

Fp green=pump gas whore

This is quoted directly from my friend George with the 2.3 as well as an internally gated PTE SCM50.

"Here are some of my observations. The 7bolt with same setup.
93 octane
In 3rd 21psi at 3600-3800rpm.
4th gear 21psi at 3800-4000.
5th gear 21psi at 4000-4200.
Vacumn at Idle -14.
93 octane
2.3 Stroker
3rd gear 21psi at 2600-2800rpm
4th gear 21psi at 2900rpm
5th gear 21psi at 3100rpm
Vacuum at idle -18."

190 will be fine. Just rewire it.
If you start to see problems with the intercooler, buy a new core.
3" is better, yes.
Your tranny should be fine.
Yes.
Don't worry about it, yet.
I just saved you a decent bit :p

Oh yeah, Ill also be using a gasket matched head (matched to gasket that came with evo3 exhaust manifold dsmtuners deal) thats had an oversize valve job as well. Would I run into problems with the evo3 exhaust manifold? What about the intake manifold as well?

No and no. Although an intake manifold would help, it isn't needed.

Now I just have to get my car running....the fuel line in between the pump assembly and the fitting broke while I was trying to remove the fitting....sucks.

And then comes the waiting for alll the parts...LOL. And THEN I have to decide what 50 trim to get...haha...

I think I might just throw on my ported 14b, ported evo3 mani, ported o2 housing until I can get the 2.3 ready. Thanks for the help!
