Hi, I am thinking of buying a 1990 GST with 120k miles on it. The owner said it has an exhaust and intake. He also said his friend and him rebuilt the engine. I am not sure how much they actually rebuilt though. I don't think it was a full rebuild. He said the car runs and will need a new clutch and possibly transmission soon. Thanks for your help.

Michael

Do you want it for free? Sound's like a project, but if the shell is good and interior is decent jump on that for sure. But if it's only 400 assume something is going to break soon.

Have your local mechanic check the car before you buy it. If you can ask the seller if theyll pay for the mechanic to check it. It sounds like a good deal, but if they rebuilt the engine themselves...that could be a problem.

I picked up my 91 awd tsi with 152k for 500. The owner said it had no fuel or spark, so he replaced the fuel pump, transistor pack and coils, wire, and plugs. When it still didn't fix it, he gave up and just decided to sell it for the parts he had in it.

Engine was untouched, no mods. With turbo, oil pump, water pump, and timing belt replaced at 100k.

I grabbed it with no questions asked. Popped in the ecu from my 90 eclipse and it fired right up.:D

Let it warm up, then pulled the plugs to do a compresion check. 160 across the board:D :D :D

Holy hell...I STOLE THIS CAR

Thanks for the info. I'll most likely buy it for a project car. I haven't seen the interior yet but the shell has to be painted. The front fender and hood are from a different car/color.

look in my pictures and youll see what i got for 300 dollars. leather/awd/abs/lsd/untouched 112k mile motor.

wow that was a good deal.

The interior is not as nice as i thought (no radio, paneling ripped out). I think I'll offer him $300. How do I know if he swapped out the 6 bolt for a 7 bolt or if he downgraded the turbo? Thanks!

Michael

the turbo should say td05 on the compressor housing (intake)...it will be above the intake side and below the j pipe that goes towards the ic, if it does, you should be ok.

6 or 7 bolt...ask him. if he says 7 ask why? most of the time people wont know and assume the greater number is better. obviously in this case its not always. the easy way to tell is look/feel the oil pan on the driverside if it is flat or if it bends in towards the motor. if its flat, it is a 6 bolt, if the oil pan bends in towards the motor, it is a 7 bolt. good luck.

also ask why it needs a new tranny and clutch. what leads them to believe this? hard driving? some sound they are hearing? why didnt they do a clutch job while then engine was out? did they not put it all back together correctly?

Thanks so much! I'll ask him about the clutch next time I look at the car.

Thanks again.
