This is a friends car, 95 tsi, standard trans.
He thinks he may have over rev'd it, causing this problem.
Once warmed up, there is a ticky noise from inside the engine at idle. If you rev the engine, the tick will speed up, but is not regular. Its kind of like something loose bouncing around. Once you release the throttle, and the engine is slowing down the ticking noise goes away, and then comes back at idle.
The engine still runs smooth. No CELs. But, no power (purhaps knock sensor retarding timing). Car does not try to die when clutch is pressed.
The head was removed and entirely rebuilt. The rebuld shop claimed that some valves were stretched, and also half of the valve guides needed to be replaced.
Head put back on, and no change in behaviour.
The tick is higher pitched, leading another shop to think its still up in the head. But, using a metal bar as a stethoscope it kind of does sould louder from the block. Its not lifters.
