What process is there to paint the dash and stuff without it peeling or cracking?

I bought the dupli color stuff for fabrics. Most people will recommend that and theres a few other brans, but in the end they all work the same.

Theres really no need for a base coat, you just have to make sure it is extremely clean. You have cant have any armorall left over either. They sell degreasers and stuff for that. I heard you can use rubbing alcohol. Some people sand it down a bit, but im not going to. I plan on putting enough coats down so it looks good, probably only one or 2. Then 1 or 2 coats of clear coat.

You won't need any clear coat at all. I used Dupli-Color gloss black on my airbag and center console arm rest and it matched perfectly with the Krylon Fusion Satin black hard plastic peices in my interior that I painted. The finished product has a permanant armor all look to it.
Stock black interior has a dull flat black kind of look to it which is exactly the look you'll get if you use the Duplicolor flat black paint in combo with the Krylon Fusion Flat black for the hard plastic peices.

You'll definitely want to clean your interior with a degreaser. I used Simple Green. Then you'll want to use a red scotch-brite pad to gently scuff the surface (especially on the vinyl dash pieces).

All in all, it's not hard. If I ever take my dash out I'll paint it too, but for now I'm cool with the 2 tone grey/black look.

I like mine. I dont thing Its to over powering.

2g Interiors that have color combinations other than the OEM styles look tacky and don't flow well. Pictures throughout this thread will be an example of that.

I would just do all black, or black and grey. I think it looks more awkward when you use colors with cloth seats.

^I agree, I wanted everything to flow and look 'factory'.

Here is my black/grey mix:

If I had the black dash (or I wasn't so lazy to take mine out and paint it) that's exactly the combo that I would've went with. I've said this before, and I'll say it again... BlackGSX2g has the absolute nicest, most cleanest interior on here (i like to think that mine will be coming in at a close 2nd once I get my carpet and seats installed this weekend).

Stop me when I lie...

I'll stop you in a couple months.. :shhh::thumb:

blackGSX2g, does have the best "custom" dash IMO. It goes with the clean look, factory looking, everything flows well. Yes people do the 99 all black, and that is what sets blackGSX2g's interior apart from those. It's like all the 97-99 conversions, or just the 97-99s in general, the only thing that sets us apart with so many looking a like are wheels, thus why I hate when people try to ask what wheels to get or copy other people's. It's the only way to set us apart.

blackGSX2g, care to comment on that secondary dome light you have there? I wouldn't mind hving a second one like that. My other 95 GSX, not the one in my profile, is my beater and it's like my house, I have tons of clothes and misc stuff in the back, because lets face it, no one rides back there. But at night time it's tough to find things because it's so dark back there even with the front dome lights on. I actually have more usuable dome lights that brighten up the cabin more because I don't have a moonroof, but even that is not enough.

The dome light is actually from a Ford Taurus :shhh: I installed it because 1. the factory 'map lights' in the rear view mirror (moonroof models) are absolutely a joke, and 2. I retrofitted an auto dimming/thermometer/compass rear view mirror that didn't have the lights in them.

It's got one big center light that lights up everything, and then 2 map lights on either side. I chose it because it looked like it was the right color, right size, and looked like it fit. It is 2 pieces; the first goes above the headliner, then the actual light unit screws into that. I cut out a square in the headliner so the bulbs aren't touching fabric.

I can try and get some pics of it at night to see if you like the illumination if you want.

I plan on going all black either spring break, or this summer. I of course will take out all the panels to do this. I got a few questions though.

Is it a must to take out the dash to paint it? Im very preapared to use lots of tape and whatever necessary to keep it clean. What are your thoughts on that?

If I use the dupli-color for fabrics, will I be able to paint my leather seats?

I would say absolutely. I am very picky about quality on my car and I wanted 100% even coverage with no flaws at all. I took mine out and sprayed everything in a dry dust-free room with a good heater. Plus you don't want your car to smell like a paint can, not to mention getting overspray everywhere.

Taking the dash out really isn't that hard...I got mine out in maybe a half an hour. Definately worth taking it out.

I'm pretty sure the illumination is just fine, now was it easy to install?:)

Now the only way you could improve your interior is to get those oem recaro or was it sparco, leather seats in the EVO. :D

Very easy to install...took maybe 10 minutes. Tough part is finding the dome light with the plate that goes above the headliner, my local u-pull it junkyard saved me there.

I busted my ass to find a good complete set of OEM black leather seats; the ones I've got have less than 30k miles on them so I'm keepin'em.

That being said, I think only the EVO black leather/suede Recaros would possibly convince me to swap, those things really hold on to you and look awesome:

hey guys. i have a red exterior, was thinking of leaving the top half of the interior stock grey, and painting the bottom red to match. what you guys think? or what other color would go nice with red and grey?

The outside color of your car has nothing to do with the inside color scheme. Follow the advice in this thread... stick with either grey or black (or a nice blend of both). My car has a red exterior and the black/grey 2 tone look fits perfectly.

Imagine if you decided to go with a red bottom half... what color would your carpet be? ...red? ...grey? That wouldn't really flow that well, IMO.

:notgood: horrible. Look at the first page and see how it looks when you put any kind of color in the all grey stock interior.

i was thinking of making the top black and making the entire bottom an off white kind of color cant find the exact name or do black with a medium to dark blue on some pieces but in a way to make it flow not just appear random. Any thoughts?

Well, I finished the install of my new seats last night along with the painting of my old nasty gray carpet and here are the first pics that I've taken with the new look. It was kinda dark by the time I finished so these pics were taken in low light (I had a neon shop light in there to help out). Give me your opinions... (my next step is to re-cover the door inserts in black suade).

There may be the slightest trouble in finding a shard generator to cover a facebomb. If you want a piece of CF for there (or, something that looks like CF), you're probably going to have to build it.
