hey guys

anybody ever experienced this?

i gave it a shot yesterday, but came across a few issues

1. pin that holds the fork is hard to get out
- what i did was used a punch to basically push the pin out in order for me to remove the fork holding 5th gear in, what had happened when i punched it was that it ended up chipping a tooth off the gear! (not enough room)

Question - are you meant to punch it towards the gear / away from the gear?
is there a special position # place the gear when doing this??

is there a special tool? i just used a straight punch

2. removing the 2 gears from the first cover, how do i do this?
i undid the nuts (36mm) and tried to lever the gears up with a screw driver and they started to chip!! damn brittle!.. anyway, im sure i have to use a gear puller, does anybody know what type to use? there are so many on the market these days.

is there one that doesn't need much room?

3. how do i get the ball bearing out of the rail (from removing the spring / nut)..
do i use a magnet?

4. installing the spool, i haven't gotten this far yet, but if anybody has any info to add, i'd appreciate it!..

I've contacted SBR, they gave me some good info
I've tried to contact JOHN from TRE but no reply as yet

---

In the TRE spool pack, i had a
1x billet spool
2x little spacers with hex key bolts in them (rectangle side and round side)
1x ball bearing
1x VCE retaining fitting (3 allen key bolts)
now my question with this is:

-do i need to adjust the spacers at all?
-do i need to loctite them??.
-and with the ball bearing, what is it for?
-also the retaining fitting, how do i install that? what is its purpose? just to hold that shaft in? since the VC isn't required anymore?

thanks guys
any help is appreciated!

heres a pic of the item.

The pin for 5th gear you use a punch to knock out, and yes you hit it towards the gear. I've found that by moving the shiftfork out away from the case it helps with clearance with the pin and synchro/gear.

The two large gears you should use some type of puller, but if you have pry bars that are thin enough they can get underneath them. Do not pry on the mating surfaces of the cases directly.

The 3 balls on the front can usually be pulled out with a magnet, if not just wait until the case is pulled off and they should fall out.

Now as for the spool, definitely use loctite on the bolts they supply with it and any other bolts that will be removed from parts inside the transmission.. The purple machined piece is to retain the output shaft in place. Make note of where a ball bearing will fit in it and the end of the shaft before assembly as to not break any of the small bolts or strip out the holes.

I have one of these installed currently, and these were some things encountered during my install.

awesome, thanks for the reply

i had attempted it again yesterday..
first cover came off with easy again
vce came off easily

i managed to get a spare center diff off a friend
so the spool went in actually very easily into the case!!

undid all the bolts holding the spider gears in, they came out easily
in went the spool, everything fitted very nicely!!

so that part is done, now i went for the removal of 5th gear again

i tried using a screw driver (chipped a few teeth again!!)
got it up high enough for a gear puller, (chipped a few teeth again!!)

so i gave up.. its going to a gearbox specialist on monday

so my efforts have lead me to more harm than good!

its a galant vr4 rs gearbox so im hoping i can find a 5th from another gearbox which would be taller.. maybe from the AUS SPEC Vr4..

anyway, thanks for your help

oh by the way, the alloy retainer is very simple, it just locks the xfer case shaft into the box, tre did a great job designing the spool..

i was happy with that at least!!

now i'll just wait for the expensive bill to come my way

anybody got a 5th they want to sell me?!?!
