I want to install my new cams and 3g lifters and have read the RRE method. You wiretire the cam gears ,set the engine to top dead and thats about it.I am wondering though about some mention of using think its the tensioner type rod tool in their faq.I wonder why this is necessary if you just tie up the belts with wire tires and unbolt the cam gears with belt tied to them why would you have to mess with this tool and belt tension. The tensioner is automatic I thought.I have one of these tools but just want some clarification from someone who has done the cam swap with the RRE method.is it necessary to play with this tensioner tool and what exactly are the reasons for this part of the instructions.??

Hi,

I just did my cams the rre way and I didn't use that special tool. You just need to make sure that the belt doesn't loosen to much that it can skip a teeth on the crank pulley.

Al92,

If you already have the tool I suggest you use it. It compresses the tensioner and thus takes the tension out of the belt. Slap some grease on the threaded portion of the tool and insert into the little opening. Keeping turning it until you hit some major resistance, then stop. Why do you need to do this if the cam gears are still zip tied to the belts? Because pushing the cam gears back on the cam dowel pin(s) is alot harder when you have tension on the belts. I pulled my brothers head off his 91 turbo and without the tensioner tool, the only way to slide the belt of the cam gears was to cut the belt off. Thats how much tension was on the belt. Now imagine trying to wiggle the cam gear back onto the cam dowel pin with tension still on the belt. Can it be done without the tool, sure. Why make your life harder.

matco tool also has a trick cam sprocket tool that fits in between the sprockets, and locks them into place. you line up the marks, stick this little rascal in there, it fits perfectly between the teeth, and it absolutely locks the cam gears from turning. then, you tie wrap the belt to the sprockets. there is no way the belt is gonna slip. and, i agree, you absolutely need the tensioner tool.
