Installing Airbags on 99 eclipse gs

I was in an accident a couple months ago (ice). And my airbags deployed. I have been able to get a new driver side airbag and a passenger airbag- and I am getting a new srs computer. My issue is I can't seem to find the airbag sensors- people have told me there in the fenders but i didn't seem to find them. Does anyone know where they would be located on a 1999 mitsubishi eclipse gs? I hav ebeen told the installation isnt thats diffifult (and I understand the potential rish i take on by installing it myself). If anyone could give me any help in telling me the steps of istalling as well as the sensor location I would appreciate it...thanks

I searched all data they stated to install new airbags and the SRSECU unit. Make sure the battery is disconnected. Make sure the unit is properly secured before reconnecting battery. Do not use and ohm meter or drop rotate vibrate the unit etc. Once installed reconnect battery turn key to on position if the SRS airbag light illuminates for 7 seconds or so and shuts off the SRS sytem is function properly.


CAUTION :


Never attempt to disassemble or repair the SRS-ECU. If faulty, replace it.
Do not drop or subject the SRS-ECU to impact or vibration. If dents, cracking, deformation, or rust are discovered on the SRS-ECU, replace it with a new SRS-ECU. Discard the old one.
After deployment of the air bags, replace the SRS-ECU with a new one.
Never use an ohmmeter on or near the SRS-ECU, and use only the special test equipment described.
Pre-removal operation
Turn the ignition key to the "LOCK" position.


Removal

Negative (-) Battery Cable Disconnection Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and tape the terminal.
CAUTION: The SRS may not activate if SRS-ECU is not installed properly, which could result in the SRS system not operating properly in a collision.


Remove Inner box
Remove SRS-ECU and harness connector connection
Remove SRS-ECU
Remove shift lever knob (M/T)
Remove Ashtray
Remove center console panel
Remove floor console assembly
Remove Bracket
Installation
To Install reverse the Removal steps and note the following.

CAUTION: The SRS may not activate if SRS-ECU is not installed properly, which could result in the SRS system not operating properly in a collision.

Post-installation Inspection
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position. Does the "SRS" warning light illuminate for about 7 seconds , turn OFF and then remain OFF? If yes, SRS system is functioning properly. If no, refer to Troubleshooting.

Thanks, but do you know where the crash sensors are located? People have told me fenders (and there supposed to be red wires) - I don't have anything resembling that.

The sensors are in the crumple zone on the underside of the fender. You will have to pull off the fender liner, and possiby the fender to find it. It's a rectangular box with red wire/red plastic connector coming off of it.

I had the front clip off my 99gs and never noticed them. They would have to be located inside the fenders like sated above. Probably pull off the wheels and remove the inner fender?

i replaced my bags about 6 months ago, just remember disconnect the battery wait at least 15 mins, then disconnect the wire off of the srs computer, then remove air bags... just so you know now your light is most likely not going to go out which means that your srs system is NOT going to work (mine did not). you WILL HAVE TO take it to the dealership to have them clear the code (i tried all sorts of different computers in class last year and nothing would clear the code for a Mit.) if i remember correctly they priced it to me for $75. which sucks because it only takes about 15 mins to do it

if you call the dealership they MIGHT tell you where there at, there only little boxes about a 1/4 thick 1in-2in long 1in tall.

o and just some more advice. try to stay off to the side of the bag when installing, never know what will happen with those things, keep one foot on the ground at all times (static shock could set it off)

yea i know - everyone seems to say they are in the fenders and there red colored...but for some reason i removed both fenders and i dont see anything resembling that...even on the undamaged side fender...idk i feel kinda retarted ### everyone keeps telling me there supposed to be there...anyways i took som pics of what i thought might be replacements..that some1 may have put in before i purchased the car?...idk man

Did you even look at my pictures?

I posted it clear as day. Remove your fender liners, and it's on the underside of the frame/fender support.

quick question- if the an airbag deploys then the srs computer and both sensors would have to be replaced?? i had an accident on passenger side- so im wondering if my driver side sensor is still useful? (both bags delpoyed tho)

The passenger sensor will have to be replaced. (it's pretty much a fusible link) SRS computer will just have to be reset by a dealer.

Artic are you sure all cars have the shock sensors and its not on some of the higher end models? My 99 gs didnt have them either. I dont even see a connector on the OPs car. My GS was torn down to the fram rails whever we repainted it and I never noticed the sensors like in your pics.

Just a thought but call the dealer and give them you VIN maybe they are located in different positions on the different years.

If a vehicle is equipped with SRS, it's required to have crash sensors in the crumple zones of the fenders for a front end impact.

The pictures I posted are from a 95. My 97 has them in the exact same spot. I guess it's possible that they were removed prior by a previous owner, but that would mean your airbags wouldn't activate in a front end collision.

I think if you remove your inner fender you'll find what your looking for just like ArticNemisis has stated.

If you take off those black plastic fender liners that arch over the whee/tire, i'd be willing to bet you will find them underneath of the frame, looking up at it from the ground.

Hey I took a really good look for these sensors today- I took off both fender liners and I didn't see anything resembling sensors. In the picture that was posted were the sensor come conects to that open box - I have that but there is nothing there...tomorrow i am going to call up some places or visit a dealership and ask specifically.

I had been repairing a '99 mits eclipse RS and come to find out, according to the dealer service manual, the '99 eclipse DOES NOT have front airbag sensors. The sensor is built into the control module under the rear portion of the center console.

Don't ask me why Mits. did that , but that's all there is to it..

Anyhow, that's all I've got.

Update:

Just thought I'd let ya'll know that I took the car to a bodyshop ($40) and had the code cleared today - don't take your vehicle to a dealer, they'll charge you an arm and a leg!

Another thing, I've read a few guys saying that disconnecting the battery for a certain amount of time will clear the SRS code, but not on this vehicle. Also, plugging in a new control module will not clear the code on the '99 Eclipse. You will still need to take your vehicle to a shop, preferably a bodyshop - labor rate is cheaper than mechanic shop...
