Installed a short shifter won't go into bottom gears? HELP!

Recently bought a 99 Eclipse RS 5 speed 2.0.. with a lot of unethical mods The short shifter that was installed had a TON of slop side to side. I took it apart and tightened up the bolts/nuts. The shifter is a Ebay knock off of the b&m short shifter. After putting everything back together I cannot get the transmission into and of the lower gears (2,4,R). The only way they will go in is if I get someone else to go outside the car into the engine bay and move the linkage on the top of the transmission forward. Then it goes right into gear, But once I pull it out of that gear it will not go back in until someone goes and moves the linkage again. I am fearing that I may have bent the shift linkage. As the top of the transmission, The passenger side linkage, I can see the wire that's inside the linkage? and I can use all the top gears (1,3,5) just fine. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I'm hoping worse case scenario is that I have to buy new shift linkage. Which I CANNOT find ANYWHERE. Lol

Sounds like the cable is out of adjustment, or there is a stop (to limit shifter movement) that is set "in" too much.

Thanks for the reply. The cable was working perfectly fine before I took it apart. So with my luck I broke something. But I hope not! Is there a way to adjust these cables? I can see where they came apart. Like i can see a metal wire inside the linkage on the transmission side. And where would this "stop" be? It's like the cable doesn't have enough pressure to flip the switch on the transmission to push it into gear. I can see the cable bending when someones in the car trying to put it in gear when I'm looking under the hood but it will not under any way go in unless I press the switch on the transmission.
