i'm looking to install an oil cooler for my 94 tsi since my stocker has gone bad. i've researched the vfaq's and i see how to route the hoses and mount the cooler but i need to know if there is a thermostat in my stock oil filter housing to control when the oil flows to the cooler or if i need to make provisions for this some other way. i'm sure someone must have done this to their car.

Im guessing you have a 1990 oil cooler housing is this correct? If you do then yes the housing its self has a built in thermostat to move the oil though the cooler when the temps come into check.

unfortunately i have no such thing. i have just started researching this so my knowledge is limited. from the looks of the mach v website i need one made for my car (94=7 bolt). but i didn't know if there was already a thermostat in the oil filter housing in my car. will the 1990 oil filter housing fit on my car?

Yes, the 90 oil filter housing will fit. The 1g 7bolt has the same oil passages to the oil filter housing as the 6 bolt counter part. I actually used the oil filter housing from my 92 6 bolt on my 93 7bolt rebuild because I was too lazy to clean the original part.

If you heart is set on the swap then I say go for it, the external cooler is trick and seems to do a good job at keeping oil temps happy. Though y ou do still have to buy an oil cooler and mount it and do the plumbing. :thumb:

Definitely need to go with the 90 oil filter housing. This is what I have, and installing an aftermarket oil cooler is a simple process. Just need to get the correct AN fittings, some #8 line, hose ends and the cooler itself.

I cannot comment on the fitting question PM or ask here 92awddsm to confirm this with some info backing it up or you may have to do some searching around. I myself don't have any experience with a 1G7bolt so I cannot help you. I do know that a 2G 7 bolt housing WILL NOT bolt to a 1G 6bolt block. Been there tried that.
