Inner Tire Rod End!

So I think I figured out my wobble! The boot on my inner tie rod end broke.. Im going to go ahead and buy inner and outer and get aligned..

Is there anyplace I can pick up a boot besides dealer?

Autozone sells really nice oem style inner tierod boots, they're actually called Bellows boots though. I paid I think 20 bucks for mine and these were for my Nissan 240sx. I'm sure the oem cost about the same and fit perfect but the ones from autozone are almost always in stock (If not you get them next day) and in my case, felt like better material than the stock Nissan ones.

The only thing really complain about is the clamps, they come with zipties instead of metal clamps.. The zip ties seem to work alright though.

I'd rather not wait over a week for something as stupid as a boot to ship to me, if it fits, it'll work. I'm sure advanced auto parts sell the same part.

Don't bother replacing the boot on it, you can pick up both an inner and outer tie rod end for about $20 total at RockAuto Auto Parts.

i actually have to do this too. replaced my tie rod ends and went to get the alignment but they wouldn't do it because my left inner was bad. so got the part now and have to swap it out. what's the best way to go about replacing this part? my garage said a special tool was needed, but i know there's always a way to do it without a special tool.

You can either use a big wrench or you can rent the tool to remove the inner tie rod from advanced auto parts or autozone, just ask for a inner tie rod removal tool. It's free to rent it but you have to pay the price of the tool and they refund you upon return.

I would go with the tool, sometimes a wrench won't fit. Also, get a tie rod end removal tool, don't get the fork looking tool though because it'll rip the outer tie rod boot and cause premature failure of the joint really quick.

Very good info. I recently replaced my driver's side inner tire rod and bellows boot and the passenger's side bellows boot. I got the first boot at Pepboys for ~ $30 and the second one from JNZ for ~ $20, so I would definitely recommend JNZ. Also the inner tie rod tool I had to rent from Pep Boys because my local Auto Zone didn't have one and non of the employees even knew what one was. It's a pretty easy job, just make sure you count the number of turns it takes to screw off the outer tie rod and install it the same.

FYI, there are two different part number's for the bellows boots that you can use. The original part number was MB350581 but it was superseded by part number MB501711. Dont replace the boot? from what I hear thats the whole reason the damn thing goes out because all the dust and stuff gets in there and messes stuff up? Someone correct me if im wrong?

I believe that he was saying, don't replace only the boot. Replace the tie rods too.

Don't forget to get an alignment done afterwards.

Also those part numbers I posted are for a 1g, not sure if the 2g is the same.

I borrowed a "special tool" from a local bicycle shop. They would call it a "head set wrech"; it's a simple open-ended box wrench, made from 1/8 inch sheet metal. I don't remember if it was 1", or 1 1/8". It's used for holding a a bearing race while a lock-nut is tightened against it, on the bearing stack that the front fork pivots in. The bike industry has gone towards a different design in the last 10 years, so the wrenches are harder to find for sale, but any decent bike shop should have one.

What I was saying is that you'll probably end up spending more on just the boot (depending on where you order it from) then replacing the actual tie rod end. You can buy not only the boots but both the inner and outer tie rod end for about $20 total from RockAuto.com.

Why bother fiddling around with the rubber boot when you can just replace the whole thing for about the same price and be done with it?

Oh I didnt know what you meant I had planned on replacing it all . I use rock auto a lot but I couldnt find the boot on there thats actually the first place I checked... maybe ill look under gst or gsx or something should all be the same right?

The zip ties will work just fine, every shop I've worked in uses them. When you replace an inner tie rod and reuse the old boot in most cases the original metal clamp is destroyed. I have always just replaced it with a plastic ziptie and that seems to be what every technician I know does.

Replace your inner and outer tie rods at the same time because you have to seperate your outer tie rod from the inner anyway in order to get the new boot on, and make sure to get an alignment. It is very hard to get the wheel back where it started off ESPECIALLY if you are replacing inner and outer tie rods and even moreso if you are not using OEM parts. If you are off by more than about .05 of a degree with our cars you're going to start eating up tires.
