I am trying to remove my inner tie rod ends and am unable to figure out how to loosen them. I can't get anything in there to loosen them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well on my 2g I turned the wheel all the way, disconnect the outer tie rod end from the knuckle, remove inner bellows boot, then used a long screwdriver (or chisel) and hammer to unfold (by tapping) the 2 tabs on the tab washer from the tie rod end, then a 32mm open end wrench (or small monkey wrench) to unscrew the tie rod (rack will hold itself from turning). Or you can remove the entire steering rack (but that is a lot of work). Hopefully your 1g will be similar.

Yes my 1G sounds about the same the only problem I am seeing is the 2 flat spots to put a wrench on are on the top and bottom and not the sides, so you cannot get a wrench around it. There is no mention of how to remove these in the Haynes manual that I could find. They only talk about the outer tie rod ends. Thanks for the help. Points given.

Found out that I needed a special tool that I had to rent from PepBoys. After that all went well.

take a screw driver like someone above said, pry the ends of the lock up and take a vise grip, lock it on then HAMMER the vise grip and go counter clock wise. Just a couple of whacks and you will be good.

works for us at the shop everytime. :D

I am not sure what the exact name of it was but it was a type of tie rod puller. It had a long tube that excepted different size c-clips that fit over the flat spots on the inner tie rod and the end uses a 1/2 drive breaker bar. I tried the vise grips and hammer trick and couldn't get a good grip, but thanks for the info.

I searched the internet and this forum and nobody has a good procedure with pictures or a video for removing inner tie rods on these particular cars, not even Alldata. So I went ahead and made a video of myself replacing them and using the special inner tie rod removal tool.
