Hi all. I have a 95 GSX with the Infinity system. Mine is the one with the radio controls and cassete on the head unit with the controls for the CD changer in the trunk. I don't have the changer in the trunk and I don't really feel like ripping apart my trunk to look for the serial cable. My question is, if I bought a later Infinity head unit with the CD player built in, would it plug right into my existing wiring? If so I will go ahead and buy it, if not I guess I'll tear apart my trunk. Thanks in advance for any help.

By "Modern", do you mean the stuff they're building today? Probably not. From what I've been able to figure out -and if anyone has a line on Mits/Infinity service manuals, with real, usable diagrams, I'd love to see them- there's some proprietary stuff going on with the wiring.

If you mean you have the radio with the tape player, no CD and the graphic equalizer (7 sliders), then you may be able to install a CD player, but from what I can tell, it will have to be the 6-disc player, not the 10. The 10-disc unit takes a different DIN cable than the 6.

I've been through this on a Talon (which means I had to install the DIN cables), so I'm kind of an expert on it.

If you have the Infinity with the AUX input on the front of it, just feed it your MP3 player.

Maybe I'm confused on what you're saying. As far as I know there are two different Infinity head units, the earlier ones, like mine look like this.

It has the CD changer controls on the HU but I've never had the changer in the trunk. I don't really need a changer anyway, I'd rather have a single CD player in the front of the car. I'm wondering if a later Infinity HU will just plug into my factory wiring. The ones like this.

Yes it will, but it may require the amplifier for under the passenger seat, which also needs a DIN cable- I don't know if that's already in your car on not (I had to get one for the Talon). The wiring for the speakers is already in place under the seat- only 4 bolts to pull to get the seat out of the way.

It seems like all of the later radios have cracked tone adjustment knobs. If you get one used, try to get the security code with it. They're pretty nice radios, for factory stuff. If you do go for the changer later, they require the 10-disk changer so far as I've been able to figure out.

Have you ever just run either a portable CD or MP3 player into the front jack of your current radio?

Yeah my car has the amp under the seat. It's just that I've heard that if you replace the factory HU with an aftermarket one you have to splice some wiring to make the stock dash speakers work. I did enough stereo things to my truck to not even want to mess with this car. Besides, the radio sounds good enough for me as is, I just need a CD player. Thanks for the help though, looks like I may be buying one of these.

Ah. Then you'd be set to go to the later Infinity, just plug-and-play.

Yes, if you go aftermarket, you have to fiddle a bit as the factory harness only feeds the tweets from the amp- maybe:
