My 98 gs's exhaust is rusted up and my mechanic recommends i replace it all besides the header. What should i get that is, inexpensive, good quality and sounds at least decent? Thanks

Generally, the larger pipe diameter, the louder it will be, especially with n/a.

I'd recommend 2-2.25" for a bone stock 420a. I put 2.5 on my freinds 98gs years ago, and it was loud, drony and lost alot of tq. Loudness was helped by a muffler change, drone with a resonator in place of the cat. But the tq never came back, and the car was no fun to drive anymore.

But yes ebay would be the place to start. Prolly 150 shipped for a 2 inch catback, or around 200 with a header, tho I'd recommend staying away from the 4-1 shorty headers as they kill tq as well. 4-2-1 or long tunes for a stock motor only.

Look up spec D exhausts for your car, there roughly $200 which is kind of scary. But trust me I picked one up and it's amazing!!!! Nice deep tone and no rasp what so ever

Oh yea and I forgot to mention if your sense your replacing the full exhaust you may aswell go ahead and pick up some headers. I got my headers and down pipe off eBay for about $60. I looked at the welds and metal very closely and I have to say, they looked great. As for the cat mine was rusted to the down pipe and resonating pipe, so I had to cut it out with a grinder. But I was able to reuse it by cutting off 2 good Flanges from other parts of the exhaust and having a shop weld them on either end of the cat, assuming your cat is still working good and you can see through it with a flashlight then I'd say do this. It's no more than a few hours of labor and $40 for the weld. Just make sure that when your having the welding done that the flanges are on at the right angle just like they were before you cut the bad flanges off the cat.

I installed a Yonaka catback on my 99 GS. $240.00, stainless steel, perfect fit, sounds good (nice low growl). So far I'm really pleased with their system.
