Increasing airflow to intake

Hey guys I was gonna make a custom tube that went from the front of the bumper to the hole that sits under the air intake (I have an aftermarket intake) this way I will get a lot more air flow going to the air intake... and yes I know I can't run it like this when it rains out.

My questions is, will I gain anything from this?and if I do, will I run too lean? My car is a NT, keep that in mind.
 
Being that you are N/T has nothing at all to do with it. This mod has been done many, many times. Yes you have something to gain from doing it, you are pulling in colder air from outside which equals denser, opposed to the warmer air inside the engine bay. No, this will in no way cause your car to run lean, you are not sucking more air into your intake, just colder air. The next step after that is to make a shield covering the filter to further isolate heat from the engine bay. There are many threads that talk about and show this, here are a couple. Some are for Turbo, but the idea is still the same.

Honestly some people will say not to, as once water gets to the MAF, in most cases it will be shot, as well as the possibility of hydrolocking your engine. Others say that unless you completely submerge it in water, you will be fine, as people have drove through heavy downpour with no problems. For extra precaution, you can always build some sort of shield around the filter to help block rain. You will see biases for both sides on this board, so the decision is ultimately up to you.
 
I think it depends. The pipe doesnt suck in air all by itself. You are gonna have to drive to force air inside. Driving in the rain will not affect it. Unless you are going 50 mph directly behind another cars tire that is sending out water to the back.
But i could be wrong on this one.
Just using my logical thinking to find an answer for you.

Incorrect, you do not have to be driving in order to suck air in. Otherwise, your car would never run while sitting. Simple test, if you or someone you know smokes, blow out smoke in front of your filter, and hit the throttle.
 
Alright all finished (finally) here's some pics of the fabrication work :) I probably could have done something a little nicer (and not use zip ties :p) but I just wanted to get it done.

Good try. But WAY! to small to do any good. Triple the hose diameter and you will start getting there.
 
Good work. But why limit it with such small piping? How are you going to attach it to the filter or filter box?

If you are worried about water you could always take the water separator off a motorcycle with ram air (I think I have two left form my old zx9 I have been parting out).

I could never build a pipe like that down here in Louisiana it floods extremely too much for such a low intake.

Never the less good use of home improvement parts!!

Incorrect, colder air IS more air (by mass) which is what A/F is based upon. HOWEVER, being it's a MAF system it will automatically compensate for this (as long as he doesn't exceed the meters range or the ECU's fuel tables).

Well that hose is about the same diameter as the hole below the intake filter, any bigger and I'm gonna have to start cutting metal :(

I'm not going to actually attach it to the filter, its just meant to blow air ON the air filter. I figure this is still gotta be better than just sucking up hot air from under the hood. Thanks for the tip on the water separator, I'll have to look into that.

So what would you suggest? Should I go to a junk yard and grab an oem airbox and hook it to that? (I threw mine away a long time ago :coy: )

I never said it wasn't more air, which is why I said "denser" not just "colder." I took into consideration the MAF compensating, which is why I said the "intake" will not suck in more air, instead of saying the "filter" will not suck in more air. I was just trying to simplify things in saying that he will not run lean. :thumb:

While a good attempt, as suggested, you can go larger. I would take pics of mine, but don't have my car right now. I used dryer ducting up to the hole I made underneath the filter. I made a box to enclose the filter of tin I had laying around, with foam attached to the top to ensure a tight fit when the hood closes.
 
If you direct pipe it to the box or build a filter shroud that piping will not suffice. If you leave it it will blow some cold air near the filter but will not give you that much due to the fact at speeds there will be air flowing past the headlight pushing the cold air towards the fire wall and not much will get in the filter. Yo need 2-3" piping for a direct flow setup on a N/A.
 
Ok so basically you guys are saying, I need a bigger diameter tubing for sufficient airflow, and it has to lead to a inclosed box around the air filter so that the cold air coming will definitely get sucked up.

My point here is if the the tube is not DIRECTLY connected to the intake then a large pipe is not going to make any difference in actual performance. We are talking about a fraction of a horsepower gain by increasing the size of the tube.

Wasting money? What do you think I paid for this ghetto setup? :p haha, but no seriously you're saying connect it directly to the intake, what about the filter and MAF? Building a box around the intake won't do any good?
 
If you are going to connected to the intake that 1 1/2" hose is too small. If you get bigger piping you and you want to attach it to the intake you will need to either get a stock air box and seal off the original intake hole and make one to adapt your new piping. Or build a box around the filter that seals the filter in and pipe into that.

Do not direct pipe into the intake with out a filter or the MAF. You are going to pick up more dust and dirt with a inlet so low on the car and would eventually lead to a catastrophic failure.
