Inaccurate EGT Gauge?

I'm pretty sure my EGT gauge is reading high and I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this? It was installed by the previous owner and the probe is in the exhaust manifold and I don't know what brand it is. But under cruise it reads between 1500-1600 and when I go WOT it will usually be up over 1800.

I don't have any exhaust leaks or boost leaks, and my WOT AFR is 10.5 with 0 knock. The motor has good compression and seems healthy so I can't imagine the EGTs are actually that high.

A more logical question may be "inaccurate egt probe? Were is your cruising timing at? If that seems normal, id try a new probe. Also id say they have become less useful and way less popular. So there is a good chance you egt was installed 15 years ago or more maybe when people tuned by egt and knock. They do go bad after all. 15 years would have been a good run.

Timing depends on what speed and gear I cruise, generally between 26*-29*. I've gone from a 1g timing map to Evo8 timing map to my own and it hasn't had a noticeable affect on what EGTs the gauge shows.

I searched on here for awhile, but it doesn't seem like anyone else has this problem. I haven't heard of an EGT probe going bad before, but I guess that's possible.

The reading depends a lot on the brand of the probe and where it's placed. The probes do go bad, I've gone through several over the years.

Yea but most dsmers put it in a runner and it doesn't get much hotter than that. So you will see the hottest normal range. But like he said, they go bad. I've never had one start reading high though. I've only replaced one and it got soo slow it was useless. That's how I know it was dead. There are a few types though, and they must send different signals thus fail in different ways.
