OK. this is just serious now.
im building up my 4g63 for some good HP numbers.
im VERY VERY concerned about this whole flywheel explosion issue because i am very guilty of getting carried away with racing, high rpm shifts etc etc.
but i also dont go ANYWHERE without my girlfriend in the passengers seat and reading a post about a piece of the flywheel going through someones passengers seat just upsets my stomach something fierce.

i would like recommendations on which flywheel i should use and which scattershield. this is ABSOLUTELY necesssary. i carry passengers much too often to be worried about this.

the wierd thing is i have a 74 dart sport with a 71 340 that i wind out to 7000 rpm and i never thought about the flywheel exploding. .. .. . .
i definetely will now.

My close friend, Bruce Kwartler had this happen to him last fall:

I actually set this Galant’s record of 11.9 @ 116 on a previous pass… So this could have easily been me in the car.

If all you care about is safety, you will probably be fine with just the FW. Ether Fidenza or ACT FWs should do the trick.

However if you are racing at the track, you will be required to have a scatter shield at 11.99 (NHRA) or 11.49 (IHRA). Some tracks are stricter than others. Naturally following Bruce’s incident our track has become VERY SCTRICT! You are supposed to have an SFI approved scatter shield, but there isn’t one existence at this time. So your only option is to use a shield which is not SFI approved.

Personally, I use Harry’s ThreeSpeed shield. We have an agreement with our local IHRA track (New England Dragway) to allow us to them even though, it does not have an official SFI designation. Most other tracks make similar concessions, as long as they feel that you are using a sound safety product AND if there isn’t another option.

This isn’t really Extreme Tech topic, so I am moving it to Drivetrain. But in this case, I am gong to leave a re-direct as this is a VERY important top, which hit really close to home.

Tym’s FW explosion is a classic. But it is not very surprising, most likely, this was a 9 sec pass on a lightened stock FW… That is just asking for trouble.

Bruce’s car had stock factory FW and it was running low 12’s that night! You just don’t expect this from a 12 sec car!

I like the SSG Aluminum flywheel..

Eclipse 2.0L 1990-97 4.75 lbs

On street cars I'd run the ACT streetlight...

The way my engine is running I'm glad I have the light flywheel... I think you are a bit less likely to do alot of trans-damage with a lightweight...

If you have enough tq at launch RPM (stutter/drag ALS) you don't miss it... I will say on the street it was at first noticably easier to stall it just in normal non gear head driving... In some situations where with the stock wheel you could just slip the clutch and leave the throttle alone you now need to touch the gas a bit etc... It is'nt difficult to get used to.

I would play it safe and get a scattershield, this is also something I need to buy soon!

I dont mean to rag on you, but you really shouldnt be racing with someone else in the car, especially someone you care about.

A quality SFI approved flywheel and clutch ass. is very important to the over all safety of your car. You should also inspect the mounting hardware of the flywheel and the the pressure plate and replace them if they are old or if there is any doubt of their condition. Lastly a ThreeSpeed scatter shield is a very good idea that will make you legal at the track and help contain flywheel pieces if something were to happen.

They are available for 1G AWD : 1G FWD : 2G AWD/FWD and EVO VIII cars.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
