im going to buy a tbelt kit and had a few q's.

well im up for the 60k m. and im going to buy a tbelt kit from forced performance http://www.prostreetonline.com/buy/pro_street_timing_belt_kits/fjj-0001-dsm/
well i was going to wait till it gets warm in the spring but i have to change my power steering belt so i thought maybe i will just try to do everything at once. well iv never worked on my car (except free mods) and im a little unsure of how its going to end up. well anyways. i wanted to know if i can change the p/s belt w/out taking off any other belts. how long does it take a newbie to swap the tbelts??? i want to take my time but its getting pretty cold and it will be colder when i get my kit in like a week. thanks for your help. :talon:

You'll have to take off the alternator belt to get to the power steering belt. Changing the timing belt is simple, but time consuming, and if this is your first time, I'd suggest grabbing a friend to help you out, preferably one who has done it before. Even with the VFAQ, it looked pretty intimidating to me the first time I changed my timing belt, but it's not that difficult. You'll also need to replace your balance shaft belt the same time you swap your timing belt. A lot of people unfamiliar with the 4G63 motor fail to change this belt and if it breaks, it could jam up inside the timing belt gears and take out the timing belt, and that's not a good thing.

BTW, I hope you didn't purchase that kit yet. Not badmouthing prostreetonline or anything, but a lot of people will recommend that you get the OEM belts from the dealer because aftermarket belts have been known to break prematurely. You can probably get everything you need for less as well. I paid $80 for the t-belt, $25 for the balance shaft belt, and $40 for the water pump from autozone. You can probably talk to the folks at http://www.jnztuning.com/(they're the folks who took over the inventory for Conicelli Mitsubishi, who was a household name among DSM'ers for OEM parts) and get those parts for less since they discount for DSM'ers.

I would definitely recommend getting OEM Mitsu parts. I just bought the t-belt, balance shaft belt, tensioner pulley, and water pump (from autozone) for $200. If anything else, it's cheaper and you don't have to wait for it to be shipped.

remember to do all of the belts at the same time and get all new tensioners. Get your alternator checked out while its out. Dont skip a beat with your timing belt swap. If you go screwing this up, count your head as good as garbage because your timing can get that all mixed up. I beleive these are no tolerance motors.. so be careful and DO NOT slack it. good luck
 
It's not that big of a deal to swap a timing belt, just be sure that you read the VFAQ thoroughly. Then read it again. And keep it handy while you do the deed the first time.
And for the record, you don't *need* that screwlike tensioner tool, you can recompress the tensioner with 2 blocks of wood and a vice, and use a small allen wrench to hold the tension while you put it on. Just be sure you get it level in the vice or you'll warp the bejeezus out of it. :thumb:

sorry but your speaking a diff language. i can use one of my own tensioners?i recompress with vice?is a vice that thing pushes two things together? if this is so, how much do i compress it? :confused: thanks for all your help guys. and i skimmed the vfaq and i will print it out to study, as soon as i go buy some color ink for my printer.thanks :talon:

Ok so autozone sells the OEM mitsu parts? What brand are the oem parts? I just hit the Autozone website ( which by the way is pretty nice. I think i'm going to like the whole order online and then pickup at local store thing. Save alot of calling and waiting time) and they have:

KELLY_SPRINGFIELD timing belt for: $19.99
or
GATORBACK timing belt for: $49.99.


The $19.99 just screams at me that its too cheap. I'm I wrong?

No, I bought the belts and tensioner from the local Mitsu dealer. I bought the water pump from Autozone. Sorry for the confusion ;)

You can just unbolt the auto tensioner from the block instead of using a special tool to hold tension on it. Use a vice to squeeze the tensioner arm back into the housing and put a small allen wrench (hex key) through the lined up holes to keep it compressed. Bolt it back on, and pull the allen wrench out to put tension back on the belt.

You'll put the two blocks of wood on each side of the vice to keep the metal from marring the auto tensioner.

well i got a quote.....like 300 freakin $$$!!!! the water pump alone costed like 95 bucks. screw that! i think this included a pully? or was it 3..? do i need a new pully or something? he asked me if just wanted the timing belt or if i want to do everything.i told him everything. if everything i get is the same as forced performance but $100 less then ill go with the forced one. i dont mind changing the belts again at like another 40k.id rather save the money now. what you guys think i should do?is it really that unsafe? :confused:
