Hello everyone!

Feels good to be back. Been a long 6yrs since I was actively on the site. Had been semi searching for an Eclipse/Talon on and off for a couple of years. Finally came across a deal I couldn't pass up.

Picked up a 1996 Eclipse GS 5 Speed with 106,000 on the clock for $500.00(pic of car is my avatar and in my gallery). Car runs but does smoke a bit(burning oil me thinks). Going to do a complete teardown through the winter this year and into spring of next year. I have already torn out most of the interior as it was FILTHY.

My question is this. At $500.00, I have next to nothing invested into the car so far. I need to rebuild the engine anyway. I don't really want to go the turbo route (been there, done that, its my 9th eclipse). This car is meant for daily driving with some upgraded speed. I am wondering if I do the regular bolt ons(I/H/E), but also do 10.5 compression, Stage 1 cams and cam gears, and MAYBE a bit of nitrous, is there a requirement for megasquirt or other management system? I will be running 91 pump gas.

With all the money your putting into it you may as well just pick up a running GST and keep it on the stock T-25 and bomb around in that and have more fun.

Best of luck though,

Joel

Assuming you will be running a wet kit no you will not need a fuel controller you may have tl throw a 190lph pump in the tank to support a wet kit.

or even someothing awd ;)

Already have something AWD haha. I spend a lot of time in my 4x4 Dakota as well, so I am not looking for an AWD turbo eclipse. This car will probably be down for over a year while I slowly build it myself. Even when its up and running again, it will only be driven probably 5 months out of the year, and even then not every day. But yea, I have no need for this car to be AWD haha.

As for the turbo part, I have had gst's and gsx's, and they were fun. I wouldn't mind making this one a turbo, but since I am spending the money to completely build up the engine just to get it running, I don't know that I will have enough to drop more $$ for a turbo kit plus additional EMS and fuel support.

Just wanting to make this a nice looking DD with some extra zip above stock.

Only problem with that is that every GST or even GSX that I have found is WAAAAY overpriced and has high miles. Don't really want to spend $5k for a car that will need a whole bunch of work anyway. I'd rather spend $500 for a car and put $4k into it and have a near new vehicle with no maintenance needed.

I would get stage 2 cams if you're going to upgrade. But high compression + nitrous on a stock ecu usually don't end up that well. You would need a way to adjust timing and fuel during the wet shot. Only because you can easily melt a piston over time. 10.5 compression or higher is definitely the way to go imo. Ported head, bigger valves, bigger throttle body, under drive pulley, upgraded clutch, exhaust system will have you a really fun dd. I'm sure I'm missing a few things.

Sounds good. Thanks for the insight. I am sure as I move through the build that i will have some questions. Part of the funds I will be using is to go to replace all the steering and suspension (ball joints, tie rods, shocks, etc). All the brake parts will be replaced too. I am a stickler on maintenance, and while I would love to just throw go fast money at it, it is more important to me to have a fully functioning well maintened car, than invensting in a turbo system without the car running in tip top shape. I anticipate that after all the maintenance done, that I wont have enough for a turbo, but will have a great running fun DD. I appreciate all the help. Feels good to be back to the site!

Glad to hear your going to take the right steps. If your doing breaks look into gsx rims and upgrade to gsx breaks and rotors. It's a big improvement you can even get a 3rd Gen master cylinder or a gsx one. Suspension is always a great place to start.
