If you were to buy a diesel truck which one and why?

I'm looking to find a used one. I wish i had the money for a new diesel, but since i just bought a house that's not gonna happen.

The Dodge Diesel Cummins engine is a great way to go. Plenty of power and torque from the inline 6 cylinder. The new dodge trucks have improved drastically compared to the older trucks. The older dodges have always gotten the job done with plenty of torque to tow your boat around. What is your budget for a diesel truck?

Dodge Ram 2500/3500..I own a 06 it has been great the Cummins motors are much easier to work on then there counterparts... And are actually considered heavy duty not light duty trucks like other diesels.

If you ever had to do any work on the motor yourself go with the Cummins. A V8 turbo diesel is the worst friggin thing ever to work on. The fact that it's a V8 complicates everything and makes it a pain in the ass to work on.

Ex: changing head gasket:

Ford = start by lifting the cab off the frame...
Cummins = pull off head, change gasket, done, 6 hour 1 man job.

My Cummins has 314k on the clock now and I wouldn't trade it for either of the other brands. Sure the others have more comfy/car-ish interiors, it's a work truck so I don't give a crap about those. Buddy of mine just traded his '07 Cummins for an '11 Cummins, no complaints so far and he says the '11 is just as powerful stock as his '07 was with a programmer.

$16k budget you can get a 03-05 cummins 2500 but it will have at least 130k on the clock in decent shape for that price from what i've searched. You could get a late '90s or early 2000's cummins ram for a lot less. Just look more for rust.

RAM Cummins Turbo Diesel is the way to go....but please dont be one of those d-bags with the semi truck stacks..thats just as lame as having a 2 foot tall aluminum wing on an eclipse.

Duramax is best overall. If you are doing only towing then go with the dodge but make sure it's a manual. Only part I like about for is the back seats are largest excluding to mega cab. As far as the v6 guy, ignore him. Yes it can be faster but when you put a load behind it not only will the diesel do letter milage but it will pull better. Chevy> dodge ( by very little)> poop> ford.

Every single one of the diesels out right now have some kind of short coming. That being said you should elaborate on what exactly you plan on doing with this said diesel.

I would go with a ford diesel. My family has owned 2 rangers and put over 600k between them and they both still run, one being 2wd and one being 4x4. Cummins is hands down a great diesel motor however, the drivetrain can't handle it. Another observation from family.Yesterday I was talking to a co-worker and he said he had a 05 ram and the rear end went out on him in 30k. Right now my father in law has a 04 excursion and it's been the best diesel he has ever owned he's said. He tows large trailers every other weekend because he is a scuba instructor. Thing has just been reliable all over. I believe ford balances their vehicles out and engineers everything to work together the best.

Forgot to add i have a 19' ski boat and my 4.0 ranger tows it easy.

Iv always loved diesels. I have a f350 diesel company truck that I drive home and to work. Id like my own tho. I love everything about the trucks. The raw power they can make the sound of the huge turbo spooling threw the exhaust. I don't understand the deal with towing. All I said was a boat. I dont have any other things to tow. Id like to lift the truck a little bit and do a bank power kit

I think the implication is it's overkill. But thats nothing if you just want something fun LOL.

Either get a 7.3L Powerstroke or a 5.9L Cummins. They will both do exactly what you want.

Emissions regulations are the biggest issue.

I would try to find a southern 97-98 Ram, no rust and the best years for the Cummins. Early 24v had issues with cracked blocks, so I would avoid them.

ok thanks guys. also do i need to do anything to the motor as in arp head studs if i go with a banks power kit or any other types of kits

All three (Duramax, Powerstroke, Cummins) will hold much more than a Banks power pack before you need to do internals or ARPs. I should add however is that if you get a Cummins with an auto, you'll have to probably do a tranny rebuild with any power above stock.

dang trannys that weak???

Until it was stolen, my 02 Dodge 2500 with the cummins was the best vehicle I've ever had.
