im rebuilding my enginein my 2g and i want to remove my balance shafts.
Can anyone send me pictures and directions how to remove them the best way.
The right way. :hellyeah:
Thanx

Im sure it would be a royal pain in the ass with the motor in the car. With it out of the car its pretty simple. Getting the balance shaft bearings in and out are a pain in the ass. Just remember the phillips screw holding the oil pump gear in the housing is easy to strip. Its kind of hard to get off but if you have like an electric impact drill it makes it a breeeeze to get out. Other then that its pretty straight forward. Just remember you HAVE to block the balance shaft oiling holes.

I took my time and it was my first BSE install It only took about a hour and a half. It's pretty easy. My engine was removed from the car though.

Does that include draining the oil, removing the oil pan, timing belt, etc..... and then installing the bearings, front case with new gaskets, timing belt, timing belt cover...?

I have done 3 or 4 balance shaft delete jobs with the engine in the car, and let me tell you.....I'll never do it again. You couldn't pay me enough money to do it....well, maybe $3000 and I'll consider it. Its so time consuming and just plain not fun. :p

Balance shafts are there for a reason. I made the mistake of having a mechanic remove them from a 4 cylinder mazda truck I had at his suggestion. I regretted it ever since. I wound up putting them back after I had to replace the head. The vibration was awful.

A Mazda truck is not a DSM. I'd be surprised if you can even notice the difference on a DSM. I never have.

Nah, this was an engine out of the car, just got it back from the machine shop. That doesn't include timing either, just the install itself.

Some cars have the balance shafts in the head, which cannot be removed.Maybe that is what happened with that mazda?

I did it with my engine in the car. Had to get a little creative to get the engine low enough. I was also doing a timing job too though. I wouldn't dare go through all of that just for the delete.

I noticed a SLIGHT more vibration at lower RPM's and its more in the steering wheel.. I like the vibration though haha easy way of knowing the cars still running...plus its relaxing ;)
After a few days of driving without them you get used to it and don't even notice until someone gets in your car and asks..

For the OP it can be done without pulling the motor but its really difficult.. If i was you id just get everything you need for a timing job and pull the motor, do the BSE and then re-time the car while the motor is out as its easier without fighting the space issues..

The procedure SpawnedX posted in the second post is the best write up I've seen. Read over that, and if it seems like more than you dare to do. Don't do it.

Well, I'll probably wait a bit until I can get the grinding issue in my car looked further into. I'm also looking at dropping a 6-bolt 4g63t instead (found a guy who says he has a decent one for 500, and from the other member's posts about him he seems legit. We'll see?), at which point I could have the BSE done before the engine is dropped in. Definitely not going to even think about doing this on my own, though. I post in the Newbie forum not just because I have to.
