I think I'm going to fail emissions?

I have a 97 eagle talon and have to have emissions done to it by the end of this month. Last year I couldn't get it to pass because my stock ecu had the fault where it wouldn't allow the monitors to reset. I was able to get a friends shop to write me some fake receipts so that I could get a waver but I don't have that option this year. Since then I now have dsmlink but I have a test pipe and I removed the rear o2 sensor and replaced it with a lm-1 wideband. I disabled the rear o2 through dsmlink so there isn't a cel. My question is what will I need to do to pass emissions since this is a 97 and they will test it through the obd II port not the sniffler test?

Also I have the wideband spliced into the rear o2 sensor harness so that I log the wideband through dsmlink. So I guess my quesion is any chance of passing emissions in a 97 with no rear o2 and no cat?

I am not aware of the fault in the stock ecu is this a known problem. I am aware that you would need to put the cat, injectors if you changed them and rear o2 back in to even think about passing in NY and then do a drive cycle with the stock ecu to make it able to be read. The drive cycle consist of drive around the block a couple times and on the highway going up to 50 mhp then down to thirty then up to 70 then down to 30mph or something like that. I have the drive cycle written down somewhere. Only after a drive cycle is driven will the ecu pass inspection. But let me know if thats not what your talking about

Apparently there is some bug in some of the 97 model ecu's that won't allow all the monitors/drive cycles to complete no matter how much u drive the car. At the time I still had the stock ecu I tried everything to complete the drive cycle and it would always be incomplete. Thats no longer a problem since I have the 95 eprom ecu with dsmlink in the car now. So your saying I would have to have the stock cat, stock injectors, and rear o2 sensor installed to pass emissions?

You won't pass visual if you don't have the cat.

The test pipe I have I always play it off as a high flow cat and haven't had any problems with that.

Lucky you no sniffer test otherwise this thread would be going diffrently.

Oh I wish it were a 95 or below so that I could do a sniffer test. Thats why I love my 95 non turbo eclipse it always passes emissions with flying colors.

I cant forsee needing to put stock injectors back in...I've never seen anyone visually inspect the injectors...

Cat converter may be a prob, but if you can play it off itll be fine.

For the rear o2, you said you have the lm-1 installed....well technically it is an o2 sensor...and if theres no check engine light on....youll be fine...

Yea my ecu has the same problem. When I bought my car and tried to have it smogged I couldnt get the monitors to say "ALL READY" for the life of me. Drove 100 miles prior to the test and nothing. I've tried to have it tested about 15 times (I have a friend in smog so he can test whnever) but i cant pass unless it clears :toobad:

On top of that I got reffed a few months back and I have until April to get it done. I plan on using a friends 97 ecu for the ref/smog hoping it doesn't have the same issue but yea, shit is a ####ing PITA. I've heard you can go to mitsubishi and they can do some type of reset on it and if you dont turn the car off you can smog it but its like $90 for the service... yea, closest dealership is 40 miles away.. i don't think so.

Yeah there isn't a check engine light but I have the rear o2 disabled through link but with that done it doesn't allow the catalyst and oxygen sensor monitors to complete.

Yeah I actually tried to have mitsubishi force the monitors to reset but at the time I had the stock cat on. They ended up charging me the $90 to tell me that they couldn't force the monitors to reset because of a bad cat and it would be $675 for them to install a new cat. I now see why they are called satan, stealership ect...

Wow guys i didn't know about this ecu problem i have a 97 with a 95 eprom and i saved the stock ecu for inspection reason and i had no problem last year. (knock on wood...) But going back to the injectors now i am just asking because i am worrying about my setup. Wouldn't you create a misfire if say you were running bigger injectors on a stock ecu?? That's the only reason i said you would have to change them back.... Explain please so i don't change my injectors back for now reason inspection is up in april...

i say you should find some stock exhaust and put it on for the time being im saving mine just incause they do it here sometime. and i saw someone say you can put alcohol in and it will burn cleaner but i would look into that

Search around Spyder117, i'm sure not the only one with that issue :p

Heres the big ass thread on the ECU issue. Freakin sucks.. my car hasn't passed smog in two years because of it =( Finally gunna take care of it though... I should take a pic of my licenses plate for you guys LOLl
