I need advice on the 420a..

My close friend decided to buy a 95 eclipse gs about 4-5 months ago. Not too long ago it started knocking just like my 4g63 did. It's still driving right now and he only drives it sparingly but the time will come when eventually the motor is toast. We are trying to find the cheapest route to fix his car in order to get it back into prestine condition.


So my question is this,

What route have many of you 420a engine owners done or WOULD have done in this situation. Is there anywhere to find a 420a shortblock for cheap, or would it actually be better in the long run to just do a 4g63 swap?

what kind of numbers are we looking at for each situation?

Rebuild it with crazy internals, slap a turbo kit on and call it a day. Dont go the 4g63 route, cuz I said so.

yes that would be sick. BUT! we dont have the funds for a turbo project. I just wish i could find a used 420a shortblock in good condit but they are hard to come by...

Where is the "knock" coming from? It might not be a big deal...

not completely sure. he actually is taking his car to a diagnostics place to have it checked out which seems liek a good idea. I'll let you know of the results probably by the end of this week.

Well.. i should start of by telling you that you cant in any way shape or form put a 4g63 motor into that car without it being a waste. Since you could go out and buy the entire gs-t for less than the motor swap would cost you into the gs.

I would rebuild it. If you don't have the money, just get a stock rebuild kit. $800 or so. More if you have to have machine work done... but shouldn't cost over $1000.

and if youre really a tuner on a budget like me,you can try with a used engine from a junkyard.or if it's only problems up top just rebuild the head(depending on the miles of youre engine of course),but what crazy eclipse said is basicly everybodys dream here in the 2gnt.and don't go 4g63 swap kuzz everyone said so.peace.
