hey guys, on my 1000 mile trip back to school my oil pump fialed and i ended up throwing a rod in my engine. im in tampa now, home is maryland, and the car is in florence SC. the guys are saying it would be more expensive to rebuild the engine, and i'd be better off just getting a new used one. they said it would come to around 3K total inclusing parts, labor and tax. the engine they are talking about putting in is from a 95 eagle, automatic and N/a. i have a 95 GSX, 5 spd. will that work? is there a place aorund the northern states that could do this work better/cheaper? it would cost me about 1K (2$ per mile) to get towed anywhere too. pretty much, what are my options? time is somewhat of the element too. thanks for any input guys. btw, my original engine has about 118K miles on it.

there is no way i woud put a NA motor in my turbo car. it would cause you problems because the NA has a much higher compression raito then the turbo 4g63

you need to look around on ebay or a couple other places 4g63's can be had for under 1400 bucks and thats sometimes with a tranny. so look around.. 3000 is just way too much

Look into good old 6-Bolts..Good for 400+hp unlike the 2nd generation 7 bolt...Sorry for the problems

Edit: Just to add, please do not put the N/A motor in your turbo car..It will totally defeat the purpose of a GSX...Although it would be a little cool to have the only AWD Non-turbo eclipse..

OK first off the 95 NA motor is a 420a which is a totally different motor. You can absolutly not install that in your car. Even if your tried and It won't trust me, the chrysler 420a block will not bolt upto the mitsu awd transmission. THey would have just as much luck trying to install a hemi in your car as a 420a. Not even close, absolutly no way. If you think so, let me know I'll sell you a Honda B16 motor its as close to the motor in your car as a 420a is and will be easier to install to be honest.

Honestly I would pay somebody in your area to grab a truck and trailer and pick up your car. Failing that I'm sure you could cut a straight up deal with a tow company to pick up the car on a flat fee of like 300-400 bux or whatever. Do not let the shop your dealing with install the motor however because if they are trying to install a 420a into a 4g63 car they should not be touching the car. Ask them if a Neon engine will work in your car cause thats what they are tring to install.

What you need to do is get a 6 bolt and covert your car, but have somebody do it that has done it before or somebody that can help you do it yourself, but having your car at a shop full of banannas who know squat about the DSM platform is a HUGE mistake. You'll end up in a heep of trouble if you let them do it, mark my words.

7 bolt is well capable of 400whp, I have done it for over two years now, but I just recently pulled it for a built 6 bolt. My old 7 bolt was runing fine regardless.

The 420a will not bolt up to an AWD trans so this is not possible either.

I've seen a stock 7bolt make over 500whp. Back to my first post.. BUY MY ENGINE!!

hpw long does it take to get to s.c.??? if we could make a weekend outta it, i dont see why we couldnt use my trailer to go get it.. just a thought...

go to SC and tow it home. Then find a 90-92 6 bolt and swap it in. a few minor mods but very do able. It will be worth it in the long run. :dsm: :thumb:

Agreed. 6-bolt swap!
You said it threw a rod??? How many miles were on this car when the oil pump went out?

well, they say i blew a rod. then again, these are the same guys that were gonna put the n/a engine in. in the final strach my car was blowing out thick clouds of white smoke outta the exhuast. the oil light popped on and off on accasion, but i had oil with me that i put in. i checked the dipstick and it said it showed normal amount of oil. Pulling into a rest stop my car shut off and i had some toruble turning it over again. i finnaly got it back on, lef tthe rest stop ,and a few more miles down 95, i heard what sounded to me like a deck of cards in the spokes of a ibcycle, cept it was really really loud. by the time i heard this i realized i wasnt getting any power under acceleration, and everything siezed up and i drifted off to the side of the road. I popped the hood and i saw oil coming out from under the head gasket and all down my exhuast manifold etc etc. When i went to the place the next day, the mechanic turned it on and it sounded absloutley the same and all the guys in the garage yelled at him.. heh. and w/ my turbo timer and the car not shutting off he paniced. im sure in 5 years ll laugh at that. so their theory is my oil pump faield and cuased my rod to throw. ironically i had an autometer oil pressure guage waiting for me to put in when i got to FL.....

miriage, ill contact you through PM, if i was to buy your engine would i need to do any prep of anykind, or it will litterally drop right in?

my problem/concern is that my car is miles away, and one place says that it threw a rod, i cant really get a 2nd opinion since i cant take the car anywhere else.

thanks for all of your replies guys, i really apperciate it. i never thought i would have to deal with a new engine. i was in downpipe mode ..

so far, buy 6 bolt, and dont use that shop. any one know of any places around tampa i could get an engine dropped in?

Yeah, drops in. I can include the motor mounts w/poly inserts as well. All you'd have to do is hookup the fuel lines, plug in all the sensors, hookup IC piping and exhaust, fill it with fluids, and crank it over. The motor is in excellent running shape, it is "as is" from when it ran, I just pulled it out of the car.

Check around with auto transport companies. I just did a quick online quote at www.dtdtransport.com (first one from the list from a google search) and it was $525 from SC to Maryland. There's a lot of companies that do this sort of thing so you should check around for prices. Also, I agree that that shop should not be allowed to replace the engine in your car if they couldn't tell the difference between a 4G63 and a 420A.

I've shipped several complete motors and trannies from CA to here for 250 and under. I recently shipped a 2JZ trans to Texas for $75. You got ripped.

i agree much so , dont let them touch your car if they want to put in a 420a , wish i was closer, im about to pull my 7 bolt and sell it

If you intend to buy a motor and have it installed while in Tampa, you'll definitely need to get your ride back from the apparent "DSM Specialists" who have it now. I know speed shops aren't the easiest places to locate when you're in a strange town. They're not usually highlighted on those tourist trap maps. Not to mention most of the performance shops in the phone book are mixed in with the "Redneck Billy's Mostly Ford and Chevy Repair Shop" ads. However, in a town the size of Tampa, their should be several of them around. I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with any shops on the Gulf Coast, so I did a quick Google search for ya:

Mild to Wild Speed Shop
(813) 975-8581
702 E Bearss Ave.
Tampa, FL 33613

Wages Automotive and Speed Shop LLC
(863) 559-8991
1700 Olive St.
Lakeland, FL 33815

Bobby Watts Speed Shop
(863) 686-3411
833 N Lake Parker Ave.
Lakeland, FL 33805

A & M AUTOWORX
(813) 657-1870
501 S. Falkenburg Rd., Suite C-11 and C-12
Tampa, FL

Again, I don't know anything about any of these guys, but you might give them a call and tell them you need a motor swap done on your DSM. If you get a response like,"What's a DSM?", slam the phone down. Of course, make sure you're not just talking to their phone monkey. Often the office people don't know squat about squat, while the dudes out in the shop are mostly veterans. :laser:

well, talkiong to a friend of a good friend tnoghit, he said he put the engine in for free. he said he might even be able to get my car down here for free, since his buddy does aucitons and what not and ships cars up and down the east coast. i mentioned somehting about it being AWD and needing a flatbed, and they said they could just unhook something in one of the differentials to make it temp 2wd. ive never heard of that. anyway, this guy said he'd love to help me and hed love to drop the engine in. if it more or less "bolts up" to everything it shouldnt be a problem. he said we can rent an engine lift etc etc.. anyway, id at least want me car here(tampa) within eyesight rather than the back of some auto impound place where its resting now.

thanks for all the imput guys, i feel i at least know what my priorities are right now. btw.. heres something for the n00b board. whats so special about a 6 bolt? :shhh:

and would now be a good time to toss a new turbo on?

Hey man sorry to hear about your mishap. I live here in Florence SC and I know of an excellent shop near here. They have done several DSM's including a 2.4 L swap in a TSI AWD. Let me know if you are interested in hearing from them. They could find a motor for you or you could send them one and it won't take long for them to do it for you. Let me know if you are interested. PM me so no one would fuss.
