So I was dragging my 95 tsi last night (14.9 before everything went to shit) and on about my 5th drag I launch at about 4.5 - 5k and It goes into gear but feels clunky, when I shift into second I hear a loud clunk and the car almost tries to move in gear. So I limp it down the track and back on the sevice ramp.

When I try to move it again, the clutch pedal stays depressed and if you put it in gear you can hear something rotating and bouncing back off. The sound sounds like a grind followed by a hop and back to grind. If I put it in gear the car lurches but can't move. There is some blackish fluid all over the underside of the car, clearly coming from between the transmission and the engine.

What did I break and where can I get what I need to fix it?:talon:

There's a little bleeder plug on the clutch slave cylinder, it's the thing with a hole in it. Bleed it the same way you bleed the brakes, and make sure to keep the master cylinder full of brake fluid (as others have said, it's just to the left of the brake fluid reservoir). I'd also check the transmission fluid, see if that's what leaked out or if it was hydraulic fluid. If the clutch isn't completely disengaging, that could explain your problems getting the car into gear.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I still have to lift it up, this week of school sucked, hopefully this weekend we will get closure.

OKay so big update. Finally lifted the car up and took off the splash guard encasing the flywheel on the transmission housing. When I opened it up, flywheel looks ok but there are teeth lying in the bottom of the transmission casing. They have been ripped off of some gear or perhaps the flywheel.

The next question is, if the flywheel whee missing teeth the car wouldn't start right? Or if it would start and it were missing a few teeth, when the car gets put in gear it would surge?

Because my car used to start before the battery died, and when I would force it in gear it would surge forward and then stall/die.

So where are the teeth coming from? Hypothesis' only, I know I need to take the tranny out, but I am just trying to get a feel for what I am dealing with.

You could hand rotate the motor to check all the teeth on the flywheel. You could also pull the starter and check the teeth on the starter but I doubt that the were sheared off. They could also be the teeth on the output shaft of the tranny. That would be my guess if you were launching when it happened.

Do you mean the output shaft to the wheel, like the drive axle?

I planned on taking the starter out but I had to order a repair manual which hasn't arrived yet.
