I have a strong exhaust smell

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forums and relatively new to DSM. I have a 97 GST that is has a rebuilt motor and 900 miles or so on it. When I pull away or into my garage there is a very strong gas smell and it blows smoke. It is a faint white smoke but you can smell it if you are the car behind me. What do I do .

Does the smoke smell sweet like antifreeze? Maybe head wasn't done correct during rebuild any overheating or milky oil.

No it smells like burning oil. Doesn't smell like gas. There appears to be an oil leak as I am noticing it today.

Try to track down oil leak and see if it's hitting exhaust and burning off. Also faint light white smoke could also be water in exhaust.

I will look into the leak. And see if it is leaking water into the exhaust.

Could just condensation in the exhaust not leaking into it. Also check for exhaust leaks like at manifold and catalytic converter.

Ok. The oil is watery and not thick like it should be...This could be why I am getting my smoke. The pipe is a straight pipe system with a 3inch down pipe and 3 inch all the way back

Is the oil synthetic since it's been rebuilt like my engine has around 1k since rebuild and run royal purple looks very thin. Try a compression test to see if engine is healthy.

have you done an oil change on this car since you have owned it? If not, now would be a good time while you are inspecting for leaks so you can see the condition of the oil in the pan. Exhaust leaks by the manifold/o2 housing will leave carbon deposits on the surrounding area, so they are not typically hard to spot. I would also second the notion of trying a compression test.

usually gets worse on taco tuesday.

Gents,

Turned out that it was a valve stem seal problem. Replaced the seals and it fixed the consistent white smoke issue. Additionally, the gas smell is because the car is running extremely rich and needs a tune. Waiting for new injectors and a fuel pump b4 a tune with dsm link!
