The other day I put on a new fuel filter and while I had the metal plate in the back seat out (to disconect the fuel pump power) i noticed a very strong gas smell in that area, but no signs of leakage. After I put on the fuel filter now the cab smells VERY strong like gas when im driving around. First thing i checked was the filter but its not leaking, nothing looks damaged. I then took the back seat back out and the smell is definaly coming from that metal plate covering the fuel pump.

what do i need to do? seal that metal plate or is there something wrong with the pump? i dont see gas coming out of anything, is it normal to smell fumes there?

did you put the filter in the correct way without kinking any hoses? instaling it upsidedown could cause fuel pump problums

well now im not smelling anything so i dont know. ill wait and see if it comes back, but its not the filter. i was very careful with that and the smell was definatly coming from the fuel pump area. the car has 125k miles and i think that was the original fuel filter i replaced. i noticed a MAJOR improvment in power after putting the new filter on. is it possible maybe the computer needed some time to adjust to all the new fuel it was getting and maybe i was running very rich or something? i dont know, just a thought.

Curious if you ever resolved the problem or if it just went away, I changed my fuel filter and put in a Walbro 190 last week and it smells too. I get it the worst at idle but its still faint during regular driving. Everythings tight and I even lubed that seal on the pump when I installed it. Did anyone come up with something or will it just go away in time?
