I have a question about throttle response.

mine throttle response seems considerably delayed. if i hit the pedal to the floor at idle , just really quick to the floor and back out. the engine only revs to 2000 rpm, and it seems like it stumbles. if i want to downshift while im driving, for instance going from third to second, and i want to match the rpms by reving up about a thousand higher, it just feels sluggish. i was driving my dads 85 cavalier and the throttle response felt instantaneous to me and reved up quick. . . any ideas?
