Brick wall, meet head. Head, meet brick wall. Start banging.

Some people realize that it focking hurts and they stop. Others don't have the common sense. Don't make this thread another 420A vs 4G63 thread (which has nothing to do with this guys car).

You have 3 options:

1) Sell the non-turbo. Buy a turbo. Start from there. For $4000 you can take any turbo into the 12's and then some. Leaves you plenty to spare.
2) Build up the NA 4G63 since it is a really nice design (duh), and turbo charge it. This can be done a little more expensively than choice 1 but not overly so. Either choice is good.
3) Swap in a turbo motor and follow choice 1.

And for the record, anyone who brought up a 420A in this thread should take another look. This thread isn't about a 420A. Its a NA 4G63. Stop the 'everyone hates the 420A campaign'. Enough is enough.

Nobody started an "everyone hates the 420A caompaign." I was telling him that "Hey, people will always tell you to get a turbo car when you say I have x amount of dollars to spend." Nobody started a flame, I think you were thinking of hating on the 420A ;)

I know his car is the NA 4g63. I'm am neither ignorant or stupid.

i hate the 420a over $5,000 later in mods and i'm barely in the 15's. lets look at it this way. $5,000 + in the 15's (420a) vs. $5,000 + in a 4g63 and your looking at at least 13's. looks like a no brainer to me.

Maybe you should be buying different mods...

Some 420A's can run that stock.

But anyway, this thread has never been about a NT vs. Turbo thread. Having an extra 16K to spend is not a scenario most people experience. Most people build up their cars 1 mod at a time. If you take in all the facts of this situation, and the goal he wishes to attain (which is a 12-sec DSM), the best option is to buy a turbo DSM. Now if he wishes to keep his NT and build that up (some people enjoy that more). Then we should do what we can to help him get there.

Geo,

Before anyone can really answer a question like this, there are a few questions that I think should be answered first.

1.) Who is going to do the work on this car? Do you consider yourself a competent mechanic? If you are, 16K would go a LOOOONNNNG way if you want a 12 Second sleeper.

2.) Seeing as how you live in Florida, how much of an importance do you put on All Wheel Drive? This conversion alone would take a huge hit on your budget.

3.) How much money do you want to put into performance versus appearance? 50/50? 60/40?

4.) Is this a track only car? Daily Driver? Half&Half?

Personally, if selling the car is absolutely NOT an option, than this is the route that I would take: (Please keep in mind that I am NOT here to fan any flames, nor do I want any part of it.)
I would have Magus motorsports install a 2.4 Stroker kit with JE Forged pistons and rods. The block that you have is quite capable, it just needs some work. If your looking for the ultimate sleeper, I would stay with FWD, because when I'm looking to see whether a Eclipse, Talon, or Laser is fast, I instinctively look for an independant rear-end. (Tell-tale turbo & AWD)
I would stick with a Mitsu 20G Turbo. This in combination with the stroker kit would be a great high power, streetable turbo, with a decent spool time. I would also add all the trimmings that would need to be added, gauges, fuel management, upgrade pump, etc. I would stick with a DSM only shop with a lot of experience if you're not up to doing any of this yourself.
I would get a very beefy 5 speed transmission, and an ACT 2600 clutch.
I would sink about 5K into a nice Satin Silver paint job, 17 Inch 5-star rims, and a nice stereo system. Any money left over would be best saved for broken parts.

This would kind of stretch your budget a little, but would make for one incredible car. I personally would give you props for sticking with a 1G Non Turbo. Making a car like that run 12's reliably would be a fun trip.

Enjoy,
Matt.

actually chris i would like to know what "420a's" can run a stock 2g with full interor in the mid to low 15's. please inlighten me, cause i've never heard of a 3,000 + lb car with only 113 whp running mid 15's....., has anyone.

To tell you the truth, there's no one who is "stock" running those times. Todd on www.2gnt.com who is a moderator is running a 15.5 with quite a few mods. Jake Martin, who is SaberKahn on the board over there is running the same times, with fewer mods, in fact he'll mention his 15.5 time as with a "cracked short ram and blown shocks" or something to that effect. A few people over there claim certain times, but never have proof.

read above b4 you post please.. don't tell him to buy a new car he already said he wanted to mod this one because he also has an m3.. common guys

Well "stock" was a slight exaggeration. But we weren't even talking about mid to low 15's anyway...

But my point was and still is, if you spent $5,000 in mods and you are "barely in the 15's", then you are putting money in the wrong places. Especially if speed is your goal.

why not trade it in for a gsx? with that much money, i'd assume a gsx would be much more cabable and handle the power you can produce with that much money a bit better.

personally, i think it'd be retarded to drop 16k into a 10 year old dsm unless you plan on doing some pro racing...

should have spent $500 of that for some nitrous....you'd prolly be about a second quicker.

no, nitrous is not a option for me. i am dead set against it, and you'll never see me with it; race gas maybe, but nitrous no. please don't ask me why...... lets keep pandora's box closed.

Don't listen to those people that have no clue as to what they are talking about.

Start out with a fresh rebuild with forged parts. Get it Blue Printed and Balanced. (with parts should be about 2000). Then remove the balance shaft, get light weight underdrive pullies, then get your flywheel lightened. Then get 500cc or bigger fuel injectors, 255lph fuel pump, S-AFC, HKS PMI (MAS Replacement kit), 16g or T3/T4 turbo, tublar headers (look in Miami Lakes, a few speed shops got them for cheap), Short shifter, and a stronger clutch (not a ACT2600, yeah they have more holding power, but it helped me blow my tranny up). Go to a junk yard in davie called U-PULLIT, and pull a Starion FMIC. Go to murrays speed shop and get IC piping made, and buy a greddy Type-S BOV. Have a GOOD mechanic put it all in, and set the boost to 14-16psi. Then find a late 80's volvo or vw at a junk yard, and take off the cold start fuel injector. Have a speed shop install it in yor intake manifold (closer to the Throttle body, the better), with a preassue switch to activate it at around 10psi. And a Multi Layer Head gasket (I suggest the HKS one, they are the strongest).

With 9.0:1 forged pistons, 550cc's, and the Cold start injector and a T3/T4, with tubular headers and a Tial external wastegate, and starion FMIC. Should be good for mid 11's. The same setup on my 1994 talon es special edition, allowed me to turn a 11.8@127mph before my oil pump went, blowing the engine. (MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN A PERFORMANCE OIL PUMP AND WATER PUMP!!!!!!!!)

All this with labor at a good shop, will be about 6000 - 7000.
For even more power, go with a TRE AWD conv tranny and aluminum flywheel, and Port your heads, intake manifold (no need for exhuast if you get the tublar), and a 3 or 5 angle valve job.

After blowing my engine, I put a stock 1g NT engine in, and did head work (with a 5 angle valve job), ported my intake manifold, and exhuast manifold (untill my custom race headers are done), and my car is dynoing at 178hp at the front wheels. Yeah I have decided to stay NA this time, but I will still help you out.

E-mail me if you have any questions, I'll give you my number in case you have any questions.

This is obviously becoming a heated discussion. I'm going to stay away from it. If I came across as a dick, that was not my intention.

Good Luck with your car geo. I'm sure you'll make it fast as hell.

Ok ppl, how did I get the $16 g's to spend on a '90 dsm and why do I want to spend that money in it. You have no idea how easy it is to make money going to local public auctions and buying stuff really cheap and then posting them on Ebay!! Good example, paid $300 for an industrial printing machine and sold it for $4,500......need to say more?

Back to the car, yes I have an M3, but the idea of building this car is to smoke it and tons of other luxury sport cars here in Miami. They go around in the streets (like I do sometimes, dont get me wrong) with their M3's, M5' or MB AMG's thinking they're all that. Those are the people I actually want to race, and because I made that money so easily I dont care.

I think I'm gonna keep this engine and like I was told rebuilt it with forged parts, blueprint and balance the engine. Upgrade to whatever racing part I can drop in. Someone told me to go with the Greddy BOV but I would really like to go with the HKS, if anyone should tell me otherwise please let me know why.

I plan to buy the parts here in Miami in R2Racing and the install at HP Motorsports. If anyone has a better choice let me know.

Thanks guys, I knew practically nothing about this subject but have been reading a lot and have been learning, thanks

hey now.....this is the n/a forum, go play in your own neighborhood. last thing we need is some more $hit talking from another arrogant turbo guy...

geo-$16g is alotta money for engine mods...why not just swap in a v6 or v8 and turbo it (maybe TT)?? i'd expect that to run you about $10g which would leave some leftovers for handling mods. i'm sure that would leave a couple people with their jaws on the ground...

To tell u the truth man I would't stick with the N/A stuff. My friend used to have a 2gen N/A, he told me it was the worst mistake he has ever made. He now owns a Talon TSi AWD and is loving every second of it. I know I'll prob get scolded by some fanatical non-turbo freak, but that's alright cuz I REALLY DON'T GIVE A RAts... But if you still wanna go ahead with this N/A Eclipse, I'd advise you check out Hahn Racecraft, it seems they have mastered this engine. But keep in mind a 4G63 with 16G's in it can be a beautiful thing. I just about finishing a 20K on my car and when I finish, I'm going Viper hunting!

So whatever you choose to do, I wish you the best of luck!

WTF? Did I piss in your cornflakes? Where exactly did 'my arrogant turbo' attitude factor into this? I was simply commenting on the fact that a single individual is blowing smoke up everyone's a$$ and no-one can tell the difference.

Yeah, after reading this thread, I'm going to keep my nose out of this ignorance. It's like telling a #@%#@%#@%#@%ing brick wall how to mod its car.

16 G's in a 1990 GS...Need I say more...

Invest this money into your future...

I was actually thinking the same thing!!!....Can anyone tell me if I can drop in a 2001 200hp V6 in the engine bay of my '90??

That would be awesome! A turbocharged 6 cylinder in a '90 DAMNNN!!
Add a 75 shot of nitrous and imagine how fast that thing will go!

Any replies welcome!
Thanks for the good comments ppl!
