Okay I looked at the suggested topics and I can't really find the answer I am looking for. I have a slight dilemma here and it involves which hydraulic tensioner brand to use.

Cloyes brand is 69.99 and in stock now

Clevite brand is 109.99 and I have to wait approx 2 days

DNJ brand is 125.79 and in stock now

I have never heard of DNJ or Cloyes, and the only search I could find on Cloyes said that their timing belts don't even have the right amount of teeth which shares the sh!t out of me. Does that also carry over to the tensioner? Would you guys trust the Clevite brand? I know they make some other parts that are exceptional quality.

You can get the dayco from rockauto for like 50 bucks. They are probably one of the better ones that rockauto carries.

After shipping and handling that ends up being slightly more than the clevite again, especially since I'm already buying about 400 dollars worth of parts from rockauto, I don't have to pay for shipping twice if I get it on rock auto. Hmm.

-If you don't mind me asking, what brand was that tensioner that failed in the pictures? I'll be sure to avoid it.

I still recommend oem, If its a part that could cost you 10x what its cost why not spend a few more dollars to have peace of mind? Things like intake, exhaust, exhaust manifolds and stuff that don't play such a huge role in your engine aren't so bad to go cheaper on but if your hydrolic tensioner gives and breaks there goes your engine.

OEM/Mitsubishi. Look, this OEM hydraulic tensioner for your 6-bolt is cheaper than the Clevite!

This is what can happen to your non-OEM tensioner and is the reason I will recommend nothing but a Mitsubishi part:

Another:

I've seen this happen to tensioners, but it is usually from the tension being set way too loose. If the rod is sticking out almost all the way the tensioner arm puts a weird angle on it. I've been running the dayco ones for a while, the beck/arnley is a real good choice also. I would stay away from the dnj one though, i've had 3 of them on my sorento and they keep leaking.

Thanks for that link, I may pop on that instead of the parts dinosaur one if the parts dino ends up not being a repackaged OEM.

I don't understand how they can justify $13 for shipping for one small part. Guess I'm just a cheapskate.

Well I have something to report back. If you think getting the OE tensioner is expensive through these websites, you're in for a real treat if you decide to stop by some local dealerships. The two dealerships around here want $220 + TAX!! OMG

After drving around and calling around all morning, that 88 dollar tensioner sure looks nice. Thanks again for the link, I'll go ahead and do this right the first time. :thumb:

The 88$ link makes it seem like its the tensioner "pulley" for the exhaust BS. Any update if you bought it turbolaser? or anyone?

I for one will stand by Clevite brand parts... I'm not 100% about their tensioners but I've been using their other products for years and have never had a problem with quality of the product...

Spyder11, yes I ended up buying the $88 one that is linked in this thread. Was the exact same number as the one that came off the car.
